NORTHERN NEVADA KART CLUB: ROUND 3

STEAD, NV (June 2): Northern Nevada Kart Club was back in action at Desert Park Raceway. With one exception, a small shower during a heat race, weather was almost perfect for a day of hard racing.

The final main in Junior 2 was the race of the day as two youngsters put on a good show of hard and clean racing.

Tanner Schultz leads Brooks Anderline when the Jur-2 LO206 main begins.

When the green waved for the Junior 2 main to begin Tanner Schultz and Brooks Anderline took off and left the rest of the field in their wake. About a lap later Anderline got the lead exiting two.

Later Shultz used the draft and an inside move to retake the point then they swapped the lead again. Lap after lap both were either nose-to-tail or had only a kart length between them.

Asked about his final pass Anderline said, ?He got me going down the straightaway. I was on the inside but I didn’t quite get to the inside good enough. He snuck up the inside, got there had to stalk him for a little bit.?

While the lead duo was disputing the point behind them there was a four-way duel for fourth while Wyatt Sander was running solo in third.

A bit later Anderline got the lead back as he and Schultz roared through the chicane. In the end they finished in that order.

In the end Brooks Anderline won the Jr-1 main but Tanner Schultz was right behind him.

After the post-race weigh in Anderline said, “It was hard. Tanner made a little mistake up in 7, there was some dirt on the track, made him a little loose, slid up the track, had my opening, luckily I was, happy that we didn’t collide in the chicane that would have put us both out.”

Then he thanked Cole Nelson Racing, Invader Racing Engines, Jack Nelson, his parents and some friends that were supporting him.

Another race with a close finish was the F-125 main. This fastest of all shifter class had the most entries its had in years.

Eight racers took off when the green light was turned on and Cody McKinney was on point chased by Mike Faker. Behind them Jeff Wamre started to move to the front.

While McKinney was scooting away from the competition there was a duel for second with Wamre finally taking the spot. Further back thee was a four-way duel for fourth.

Attrition eliminated two karts as Greg Kudrom and Gerry Williams, making a return after a few years, had to drop out.

As the laps wound down Wamre was cutting into McKinney?s lead. Late in the race a lapper slowed both of them just a bit but once in the clear the chase resumed.

Going through the final three-turn complex known as “Tic Tack Toe,” Wamre was right behind McKinney, who held on to score the victory.

After the race McKinney said, ?You know I was just taking it easy, you can look over your shoulder, see where they’re at and count laps. It’s been a long day, out of shape and I was getting tired so I just took it easy. I knew he (Jeff Wamre) was there. The track got really good at the end and can’t get any better than right now.?

Two of the mains were races that combined classes. One of them was the KA100 where Seniors, Masters and Tag karts all ran together.

Right from the green flag it was all Kelsey Nelson as she just ran away from everyone. While Nelson believed she was the only on in the Senior class turned out that fourth place Jeff Wamre was also in that same group.

Kelsey Nelson ran away for the KA100 victory and she also won the Senior class.

Looking at the finishing order the Tag winner was runner-up Jeff Culver. In the final laps he was closing on Nelson but it as a case of too little too late.

“I was trying a TAG should be faster than a KA100,? Culver said later. ?The track is pretty good the rain wasn’t a factor but I’m still getting used this is only my third race here. Need to thank my wife and the kart club for putting on a great event, we’re very fortunate to have a place to run.”

The other class winner was in the Masters and that was Luke Anderson, who ended up third overall at the finish.

NNKC
Three winners in the KA100 main. Leading the group is TAG Masters winner Jeff Cluver followed by KA100 winner Luke Anderson and runner up in the KA100 Senior group, Jeff Wamre.

“I didn’t get a good start for what ever reason so I knew I had to get by a couple of karts. One guy in the heat race, I just couldn’t find a way by him so about lap 8 I got to him. Lap traffic helped me get to him and I passed him. My highlight was that I got past a fast guy in six. I’m a new racer and thank my wife for supporting me,” Anderson said.

The other combine was the Senior/Master LO206 main. Attrition played a part in the race but on the green 11 racers roared into Turn 1 and they all got through.

Up front Alec Beaudon was on point while behind him Kelly Chinander was moving forward. Early into the race karts began to drop out and in the end six of them were classed as a DNF.

In the final laps only five karts were left and Chinander was chipping away at the lead Beaudon had. At the checkered Beaudon took the victory as Chinander had her best finish this season in second.

“The Invader I had today was really, really good the best it’s ever been. It sucks, I’ve got a new chassis to switch over and this one worked fine,” Beaudon said after the race. “Unfortunately all my competition had trouble all day so it was pretty much a free escape for me to go right to the front and run away. Kelly got second, which is awesome and Nat Sombatsiri got third.”

Finishing fourth was Master winner Justin Heath.

“On Turn 5 I got past and was able to take the lead,? he said. ?I have to thank Jason and the Lord,” he said.

Starting the day were the youngest racers that compete in the Jr-1 LO206 Class. Most of the field are rookies and wear an “X” on the back of their helmets and numbers on the karts.

For these youngsters every race is a learning experience as they develop their racing skills. In fact Director of Competition Todd Thompson took some time to explain things to these rookies before every time they went out on the track.

Right after the green waved the field got through Turn 1 and began to spread out. Up front Isaiah Nobles, who won both of the heat races, started pulling away from the pack.

Behind him Joseph Hittie claimed second while Giovanni Medina and Brody Allyn were in third and fourth. At the end they all finished in that order.

For the ?”X Heads,?” as they are known, it was a special race as after this one they can take off the “X” on their helmets and karts. Now they will be positioned where they qualify and finish rather than having to start each race at the back.

Next up for the NNKC is Round 4 on June 30. Another layout of the track will be used, one that eliminates the hill section. For further information on the club please check their website at www.nnkcreno.com.
