SPARKS, NV (June 1) – Norcal Rock Racing Series visited the Wild West Motorsports Park east of Sparks for its second race of the season. Looking forward to a great day of racing 93 drivers were on hand.
Mother Nature joined in the fun so the final race Saturday was done in the rain. When the green waved Mike Bou took off with Cody Addington giving chase.
After the ski jump the drivers made a sharp right turn then headed up some rocks. At this time all racers were nose-to-tail then spread out just a bit before hitting the downhill section of rocks.
That’s where Addington made his move to take the lead. Now the chase was on as Bou fell back but was soon after then second place Brendan Thompson.
After the white flag Jake Yeoman tore into the uphill rock section and made a very hard stop against some rocks. This blocked Thompson and allowed Bou to take second.
In that final uphill pass Addington almost got stuck at the top of the rock section but was able to get free with Bou on his back bumper. One more frantic dash on the downhill rock section and Addington claimed the victory.
After the race he said, “This top corner was probably the worst one, the rocks weren’t too bad. It got slippery for sure.”
When he was asked about that last lap when the uphill rock section was almost blocked he said, “That’s where I said ‘Oh God, don’t lose it here.’ I got up on my side, had to back up then luckily powered through and was able to hold these guys off for the win.”
Then he thanked Nitto Tires, King Shocks, Lasernut, Pelican as well as all my friends. He also has a website, www.codyaddington.com.
The 4500 main had a husband-wife winning team. On the green Jimmy and co-driver Amy Jack took off while the other three were giving chase.
At first all the drivers were close but then the Jack’s began to pull away and by the time they reached the checkered there was a pretty good gap to the second place car of Justin Hall.
After the race the Amy said, “We actually won every heat today.”
Then Jimmy added, “It was one of those keep it smooth, smooth is fast so we just tried to drive smart. Actually for us slower is faster in the uphill.”
“We also race the Ultra 4 series so this is our national track so we’ve done the downhill rocks quite a few times,” Amy said. “He won’t brag about it but I will. We actually won the EMC 4500 Class at King of The Hammers this year.”
Then they thanked King Shocks, Off Road Design, B&W Drive Line, ARB and Redline.
The Pre Runner main was won by Justin Radford, who wa flying his truck over the jumps. The race itself was pretty well a cut and dried affair.
The 4800 Class had the driver that probably came the farthest, Jeremy Jones from Laramie, Wyoming. He was racing a car from Trent Fabrication in Sparks, Nevada.
When the green waved first Jones led then was passed by Justin Day. Following them were Wade Coleman and James Hubbard.
With two to go Day was held up by a lapper in the up hill rock section. This allowed Jones to close in and finally make the winning pass as they were racing through the downhill rock section.
“We ran the Legends 4800,” Jones said after the race. “In the main we led then Justin Day passed us. Then he got bottle necked and we got around him in the downhill rocks then we just kind of went from there. It was so greasy today it was very hard to get up those rocks and it also brought me to grief. The track was fast, fun very technical I mean not a lot of place to build a ton of speed.”
Then he thanked Maxxis Tires, Trent Fabrication for building an amazing car, Raceline Wheels, and his wife for allowing him to have fun and friends that helped him.
There was only one 4600 racer and that was John Snell.
One local winner was Jake Hallenbeck from Reno. He went on to win the UTV 1000 Pro class. This class had 15 starters for their main.
After the racing ended Hallenbeck, who is a big guy that races a small UTV said, “The race was awesome, a lot of fun, door-to-door, tire-to-tire, got hit a few times. I wasn’t expecting it but when it happened it was ‘okay, we’re going to be a little closer than usual.’ Wild West is always one of the best tracks I’ve every raced at, it’s fast the track maintenance is always up on points so you never have too much to worry about. This place is just fast.”
Then he thanked KMC, MRT tires, friends and family.
As usual Norcal Rock Racing brings a bunch of UTV classes. Other winners were John Retta, UTV 1000 Sportsman, Wyatt Blevins, UTV 170 Mod and Braden Judge, who won the kids class UTV 170 Stock.
There were even more as Austin Thompson won the UTV 800 class while Keith Brooks was the UTV Turbo Pro winner and Morgan McCalla was the UTV Turbo Sportsman winner.
Next up for the series is Round 3 at Prairie City on June 29th then the Side-By-Side series returns to Wild West on July 20. Finally the series ends on August 24th at Prairie City.
