GANG NATIONALS AT THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY, NV (MAY 26) – The Over The Hill Gang Nationals were at the Fernley Motocross Track, also known as the Sandbox, this weekend. The host club is the Reno chapter and entertained other chapters from California.

The weather Saturday we pretty good except for a downpour during the break then Sunday only had a slight sprinkle when the second set of motos began.

There were two motos each day and, like golf, the lowest score wins. As an example if a racer wins all four motos his or her score would be 4 while the other riders would be higher.

When the final moto ended Sunday Michael Schwartz from the Bay Chapter was the first rider to sweep all four of his motos.

OTHG Nationals.
Michael Schwartz was the first rider to complete a sweep of the weekend when he won all four of the 30 Novice motos.

Many of the races combine classes so the overall winner, also usually wins their class. But behind them there might be another race for one or more class victories.

The second race on Sunday had two classes racing and the winners were Keith Mansfield, the overall and 58 Novice winner as well as LeRoy Francard, who won the 65 Novice.

After the race Mansfield, who is from the Reno chapter, said, “It’s awesome, the track is really good and I need to thank my mom and dad, they aren’t here any more and all my friends in the Reno Gang.”

The fastest race of the day was the Master’s that combined 30, 38, 45, 52 and 58 racers. For much of the race Scott Stillmock just ran away from everyone then slowed at the end although he won the 38 Master class, which he’s the only rider in.

At the start Scott Stillmock, racing in 38 Master class was chased by Dave Duarte (24x). While both faded in the second moto each won their class.

Stillmock was being chased by Dave Duarte, who won their first race but he two eased off at the very end but his third place finish was enough to win the 45 Master Class.

This created a two-rider duel for the victory and at the checkered flag Troy Cardiel won the moto while close behind was Steve Nelson in second. In the final points tally they ended up second and third in the 45 Master Class.

OTHG Nationals
Troy Cardiel won the final 45 Master moto in a race that saw the most lead changes during Sunday’s races.

Other winners were Walker Martin, in 30 Master, Tim Tynan in 52 Master while the 58 Master winner was Randy Law.

After the race Cardiel said, “Had a bad day yesterday but pulled it off today, felt good. Those guys were going fast, tried to chase them down but Dave (Duarte) unfortunately fell, that was a gift and I made a last ditch pass and it worked. I need to thank my wife and kids.”

Another winner was Walker Martin, the 30 Master winner, who said, “I got 2-2 yesterday then today went 1-1 for the weekend and I’m leading it for the national championship in the class. The track today was great, it was awesome, the weather, it sprinkled a little bit but it was good and the competition was fierce.”

Then he thanked Reds Construction for putting me on his bike and getting me through it.

Up front when the 58 and 65 Intermediate final moto began Rich Wilson was on point with Mike McMurry, Bruce Ashmore and Brad Huffer giving chase.

The top four riders rode in the 58 Intermediate class while behind them Mark Lane would win the 65 Intermediate class.

When the checkered waved Wilson scored the victory but wound second in points to runner McMurry while Ashmore was third ahead of Huffer.

After the race Wilson said, “Had a great race that moto, all my brothers just rock and rollin’ having so much fun. I want to thank the Reno chapter for putting on a great event, the weather held out and we’re talking good times. I had the lead then I lost it to Brad Huffer, chased him down for a couple of laps and was able to get it back it makes me happy.”

Then he gave special thanks to his wife for her support.

Next up was the 30 and 38 Expert race. Winning all his motos was Kevin Hargett, who also reached the checkered flag first. The 38 Expert class had only one rider and that was Kevin Green.

Jesse Horne swept all the 45 Novice motos while Troy Decker did the same in the 52 Novice races.

Race 8 combined six classes with three of them being for the women while the other classes were the beginners in 30,38 and 52.

Up front on the men’s side the race for the Beginner victory was between Blair Richardson, who was on point in the 38 Beginner class but Brian Cranfill was right behind him.

After the finish the women’s winner, who ended up runner up in Intermediate class, Natasha Shelton said, “Oh man that was so fun, this was the best set of girls I’ve ever raced with. We diced it out and it was just awesome, couldn’t have had more fun. I want to thank my husband, Jerry for bringing us down here and my bike.”

OTHG Nationals
Natasha Shelton won the final Women’s Intermediate moto although the ended up second overall for the weekend.

The other Women’s winners were Emma Haisten in Beginner and Charlene Spoor in the Novice class.

Winning the overall victory for the day was Brian Cranfill, who had a long battle with Blair Richardson that wasn’t settled until the final laps. His win after getting passed after the white flag then he had to recover and get the lead back.

“I’m 40 years old from Ventura, California,” Cranfill said. “I had people cheering me on and telling about the gap but as soon as I started second guessing it I went down, the guy passed me, I jumped back up, got the bike started and just gave it everything I had. The track’s good, it’s my first racing in the sand but I almost prefer it over hard pack now.”

He then thanked his buddy Barrett Kiick, who is also an advocate and coach and his friend Steve that talked him into racing.

The other winners were Ashley Yetter in 30 Beginner and the 52 Beginner winner Mark Smith.

For drama the 38 and 30 Intermediate final moto would have been hard to beat. When the gate dropped Reno chapter president Sedanna Losey took off with the rest of the chasing her.

OTHG Nationals
Reno chapter Sedanna Losey (24R) leads the charge. In the second 38 Intermediate moto she had to come back from fourth, after a restart, won the moto and clinched the weekend’s overall victory.

However not all the gates functioned so the race was red flagged and riders sent back to the gate for a full restart. This time Daniel Wolf was on point with George Forbes giving chase while Losey was fourth.

It took about a lap before she got a full head of steam and moved into third. Then while going through a section before the final hill Losey passed both Forbes and Wolf to take over the lead.

From there she poured it on and kept increasing the gap while Forbest and Wolf disputed second and third; they finished in that order. Up front no one was going to catch Losey unless she made a huge mistake.

Behind her Michael Worrall claimed the 30 Intermediate victory with Michael Haisten in the runner up position.

After taking the checkered flag and being greeted by her family and friends Losey said, “So we had to do a restart, I jumped off the gate good but the guy next to me spun and went right in front me, hit my front tire and had to stomp my foot down, but I stayed up, came out of it fourth. Then just worked my way up, it felt good like I was riding good and tried to stay loose.”

In the 45 and 52 Intermediate class there was a local chapter one-two finish. The race for that class came down to a duel between Aaron Bissell and Chad Olson.

Lap after lap they chased each other around the track until the finish when Bissell won by a couple of bike lengths over Olson. In 52 Intermediate the winner was Darrin Delorme.

OTHG Nationals
The final 45 Intermediate moto wasn’t settled until the checkered flag. Here Aaron Bissell just beats Chad Olson at the line.

The final Gang race featured two bikes that had the same number but a different letter behind them. In the end Greg Anderson bested Randy Jones for the 52 Expert victory and sweep of the weekend while Dave Blunk was the 58 Expert winner.

There were three support races and in the kids event, that started both days Incline High School freshman Otto Albrecht left every one in his dust while Landen Williams was second.

Each day ended with two multi-class support races.

Zanden Rockenstein was the beginner winner while Zayne Bissell took the novice victory. In the final event Chris Cumbo was the intermediate winner while Jay Hatchett, who only raced Saturday, won the expert class.

After two days of hard racing the medics did need to attend to a couple of riders. While no one needed to be transported those injured would need a check up.

Not counting the support riders there were 155 Gang members that raced. Everyone had fun, including enjoying a Saturday BBQ and chances to win prizes in a raffle that same evening.

Still it’s the homeboys and girls defending their turf so in the end the Reno chapter scored 10 overall victories while the Sierra chapter claimed six. The South chapter had four overall victories while Bay had three and Valley claimed two.

All in all, everyone had a good time and enjoyed a weekend of fun racing.

Now the Sandbox is quiet although clean up was still going on Memorial Day. Next race, other than practice, will be when the fall series for Battle Born MX begins after the summer has ended.

The next OTHG National round is on August 30/31 at the Argyll MX track in Dixon, California. For further information and the complete official results please check with www.othgmx.org.
