RENO, NV (May 22) — Racing Preview this week is full of events as we highlight the biggest racing weekend of the year. There is something for about any race fan.
CAR MEETS AND CRUISES:
• Racing Preview has several car meets and cruises for the weekend.
Things start Friday at Summit Racing from 6 until 8 p.m. when they have their weekly cruise in. The location is 960 East Glendale in Sparks.
Then on Saturday, from 9 until 3 p.m. there is the Summer Salute Car Show at Rancho San Rafael. Depending on the weather there could be as many as 600 cars on display.
On Sunday from 10 until 3 p.m. there is Muscle Car Mania back at Summit Racing. This is a great way to end the weekend if you are a car person.
No matter what the weather is Carson Cars & Coffee will have their monthly meet starting at 11 a.m. Sunday. The location is at the Dutch Brothers Coffee at 1449 South Carson Street.
RACING (REGIONAL):
• While there is some racing scheduled for this weekend it could depend on the weather if two of them actually happen while the third will go regardless of the weather.
The weekend starts at the Diamond Mountain Speedway up in Susanville, California. Right now the track has a 7 p.m. start to the racing. Considering the weather one should check the track’s Face Book page before heading out.
While it’s schedule has Saturday listed there will be no racing this weekend at Fernley 95A Speedway.
A pair of two-day events are slated for this region.
The Valley Off Road Racing Association (VORRA) has scheduled racing Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at the Wild West Motorsports Park. This will probably depend on the weather and how the track holds up.
For the full schedule go to www.facebook.com/valleyoffroadracingassociation.
One event that will go off regardless of the weather is this weekend’s Over The Hill Gang Nationals. Start time both Saturday and Sunday should be around 9 a.m. as riders from across the west compete on the Fernley Motocross track.
Riders race in two motos each day with their combined finish determining how they are ranked Sunday afternoon.
• Over the hill in Northern California the MMX track in Marysville has a full schedule for the weekend.
On Saturday the main, sand and kids track will have practice from 9 until 3 p.m. then on Sunday from 9 until 3 p.m. there will be practice sessions on the same tracks plus an OSMX ride on the Vintage track.
For those that want more there are practice sessions from 9 until 3 p.m. Memorial Day.
• REP racing has moved Saturday’s race from Prairie City to Riverfront. Seems the PC track is still a mess after the Hangtown Classic last week.
So Riverfront has a practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday then on Saturday gates open at noon, practice at 4 p.m. with racing to start at 5 then on Sunday from 9 until 2 p.m. there will be practice.
E Street MX Park has practice sessions from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):
• Now Racing Preview swings over to TV land and the Internet.
On Thursday Fox Sports 1 has delayed coverage of the first NASCAR Cup practice from Charlotte starting at noon. Then at 1 p.m. its Xfinity practice followed at 2 p.m. by NASCAR Race Hub.
Then at 4 p.m. the network covers the NASCAR Cup qualifying for the Coke 600.
• As usual Friday is pretty slim but at 12:30 p.m. NBC Sports has NASCAR America. This is a good time to catch up on racing one may have missed on www.youtube.com.
• Saturday starts early as Fox Sports t 6:30 a.m. has Xfinity qualifying followed at 10 a.m. by the race.
This week the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series visits Fox Raceway in Pala, California. Once again if one doesn’t have NBC Sports Gold there will be some channel switching needed.
MAVTV has the first 250 moto at 1 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. by the first 450 moto. Then things switch to NBC Sports as the 2nd 250 moto is shown at 3 p.m. with the second and final 450 moto aired at 4 p.m.
• Over on the Internet there are a bunch of races that will be streamed on www.fanschoice.tv. Things get started 3 p.m. when the American Flat Track series visits the Illinois State Fair Grounds.
Following that are a series of short races beginning at 3:30 with Langley Speedway, Berlin Raceway then at 5 p.m. Magic Valley Speedway followed by Tucson Speedway and ending at 7 p.m. with a race streamed from Alaska Raceway Park.
Now back to TV Land.
• Sunday begins at 6:05 a.m. when ESPN airs the Formula 1 race from Monaco. The broadcast will be shown on a delayed basis at 12:30 p.m. on ABC then at 3 p.m. on ESPN News.
With a few changes this race is held on the same streets it has been run on since the late 1920s.
The granddaddy of Memorial Day races is the Indy 500 and that is shown live on NBC starting at 9 a.m. and later on a delayed basis at 5 p.m. So there are three opportunities to see this open wheel classic.
Later in the afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. FOX airs the longest NASCAR race of the season the annual Coca-Cola 600. Unlike the Indy Cars the Cup racers are going slower but longer on a mile and a half oval so patience is key to having a shot at the victory.
• Switching back to the Internet Fans Choice TV at 1 p.m. has more flat track racing from the Illinois State Fairground. Should be some good two-wheeled action here.
Then on Monday, if a race fan wants more, the network will stream a race at 5:45 p.m. from Meridan Speedway.
That’s all for this weekend. If possible try and get out to see a race live as there is nothing like it. Until next week, have a safe and enjoyable weekend and on Monday take some time to remember the true meaning of this holiday.
• Teresa’s Garage Radio Show will be on from 2 until 3 p.m. this Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully we won’t have the technical problems we had during the last show.
I have a preview at 2:15 and the show covers all things automotive. You can listen to it over the air, streaming on the Internet or see us live on Face Book. Hope you’ll check it out.
