STEAD, NV (May 5) – The Northern Nevada Kart Club held the second race of its season at Desert Park Raceway. Mother Nature blessed the event with almost perfect weather for a day of hard racing.
For this round the short course was used. Part of that is the old turn now number 8, onto the front straight. Not everyone got it right and the barrier got a good work out during the day.
The race of the day was the Senior LO206 main.
Right after the green it became a three-way battle for the lead. Up front veteran Steve Dow was holding off two younger rivals, Jacob Ciari and Alec Beaudon.
Behind the lead trio Kelly Chinander slotted herself into a solo fourth place. Following her were Sam Marson and Nat Sombatsiri.
Part way into the race Dow and Beaudoin swapped the lead at least twice a lap. Eventually Dow slipped back to third while Ciari moved into the lead.
Shortly after that Dow took the point again. He usually would out gun his younger rivals in Turns 2 and 3.
That final turn caused grief for several drivers during the day and Stevie-Ray Rosario was the first in this race to test the barrier.
With two to go the next to find that barrier was Beaudon, who slid into it ending his race.
At that time Dow had enough of a lead and went unchallenged to the checkered flag. Behind him Ciari finished second while Chinander moved up to third.
Asked if it was “old age and treachery” won the day Dow’s answer was “Exactly.”
Then he continued, “This is the most fun group of racers I’ve been able to race with. It’s just being ready for the next opportunity, we’re running so close nose-to-tail that anybody has that chance to make an advancement on the one that’s ahead of him. This is a good bunch of guys and girl to race with, we can race wheel-to-wheel and not touch.”
Then he thanked his granddaughter for keeping him in the sport and his wife for supporting him having fun.
Usually the Masters LO206 Class runs with the Seniiors but due to the short track they had a separate race of their own.
On the green Brud Beaudoin was on point but a mistake in the final turn let Jason Anderline take the lead. After that there was no catching Anderline so Beaudoin settled for the runner-up slot at the cnd.
There were only three karts in the KA100 main and one of them was a TAG kart. As a result no points were earned.
Despite their low numbers this race has about the closest finish of the day. Jeff Culver had to hold off a determined Luke Anderson and they finished in that order just inches apart with Mike McMullen finishing third.
This year there are more Junior 1 LO206 racers but in the heats Joseph Hitti and Isaiah Nobels ran nose-to-tail. In fact they started the main that way and it appeared to be another two-kart duel for the win.
Unfortunately they eventually got separated and both of them had some interesting experiences lapping the slower kart. This class has the least experienced racers and during the day some of them found the Turn 8 barrier.
In the end Hitti scored the victory with Nobles a distant second followed by Giovanni Medina and Drew Marson.
The fastest race of the day combined the F80 and -125 shifters into one race. First on point was Mike Faker but two laps in Jeff Wamre took over the lead and was never headed.
After the post race weigh in Wamre said, “Things went well today, I guess it was my day, didn’t to much to the Kart just drove. The track was pretty good today, I had grip, so thing were good.”
Then he thanked his wife, Sudden Impact Baits, Brian Fisher at Fisher Racing Engines and Rodney at Nevada Kart Sport.
Final race of the day was for the Junior 2 LO206 class. These drivers, while young, have more experience but due to age can’t move up a class.
On the green Brooks Anderline was on point with Deeahmee Malone and Tanner Schultz giving chase. As the race progressed Anderline steadily pulled away from everyone.
As the laps wound down Malone started fighting a tire that was going down. Taking advantage of the situation in the final laps Schultz chose the final turn to make his move and with only an inch or more to spare he took over second.
Then as Malone was nursing his kart through the final lap and heading for the flag Wyatt Sander was able to move into third while Malone, who ended up fourth spun right after taking the checkered.
This season there are more new members as well as youngsters racing to the mood is very upbeat going into the summer. Next race for the NNKC is Sunday, June 2.
