MOTOCROSS SEASON GETS ROLLING

RENO, NV (March 21) – Motocross season began at the Sandbox, or the Fernley/Wadsworth Motocross Track on St. Patrick’s Day. New is the key word this time, the season, track layout and scoring system.

This year the track layout was changed and moved to the west. Seems part of the old track might have been on federal land and the new layout does seem a bit faster.

Since it was Saint Patrick’s Day some riders did hit the jackpot and one pro scored the overall in both classes he competes in.

BBMX

On his way to winning both Pro classes T.J. Taylor rips through a corner at round 1 of the BBMX spring series.

After winning the second 250/450 pro moto T.J. Taylor said, “It was a pretty good race but in the first moto I got third. Track’s holding up pretty good, not getting too rough but a little rough.”

Then he thanked his mother and he father’s shop Testa Motorsports for their support.

When the first 250/450F Pro moto began there was the usual scramble but in the end Dylan Galliett won followed by Austin Serpa and Taylor. At the start of their second moto Taylor took off and left everyone in his dust.

At the end all three riders scored four points but Taylor, by virtue of the final moto victory ended up first followed up by Serpa, with two runner up finishes and third place Galliett.

In the 125/250F Pro class it was all Taylor as the rocketed to his second overall victory of the day.

BBMX

Casey Carmichael on his way to winning three classes at the BBMX opening round.

Another fast class is Schoolboy that always has fast young racers competing. Leading the charge was Casey Carmichael and no one was able to even come close to him.

After the finish he said, “Track is getting rough, just want to find smooth lines where no one goes.”

Then he thanked CP Racing, his parents and those supporting him. Later he scored victories in 125/250 Intermediate as well as in 250/450 Intermediate class making him a triple winner.

Another rider scoring a double was Ryan Ferris with victories in 25+ Open as well as 30+ Masters Classes. Once again once the gate dropped this veteran left everyone in his dust.

BBMX

Veteran Ryan Ferris on his way to winning two classes.

“This is my third win, got one more race to go,” Ferris said after scoring the win in 25+ Open. “Got a great jump, great start so tried to find some smooth lines and keep my arms from pumping too bad. Out there having fun, track’s getting pretty rough but it’s a great layout.”

Then he thanked his family for their support.

Veteran Scott Stillmock also scored two victories when he won the Club Motos as well as the 40+ Master class.

Young Chase Cannizzaro was another racer scoring triple victorie this day as he won in 85 intermediate, 85 Open and finally in Supermini, a good day for him.

BBMX

Another rider fining gold at the end of the rainbow was young Chase Cannizzaro as he won victories in three different 85cc classes.

In the Womens’ class there are two divisions. Jasmyne Herrera won the “A” group while the “B” group winner was Claire Petrie.

A few second motos went right down to either the flag or close to it.

BBMX

As they race to the finish of the 85cc Beginner second moto Skyler Roberts just manages to hold off Joshua Black, who is on his back bumper.

In 85cc Beginner Skyler Roberts had his hands full as Joahua Black was on his back fender for most of the second moto. In the end Roberts scored the win and claimed the day’s overall victory.

When the second 250/450 Division 1 moto began Chance Morlan took off but soon had Darian Gentile closing and eventually getting past to tale the lead. On the final corner Gentile over cooked the last turn and went over the berm.

BBMX

In the second 250/450 Beginner, Division 1 moto Chance Morlan chases eventual winner Darian Gentile.

Close behind Morlan took the gift and scooted past to claim both the moto and overall victory. Gentile did recover but ended up in the runner-up position.

The “Squeaker Award”, if there was one would go to the second 125/250 Division 2 second moto. After just a few laps it was apparent the victory was going to be decided between Logan Holmes and Colton Chamness.

Lap after lap they ran side-by-side, inches apart tearing down the straights, over the jumps and around the corners. The margin of victory was only inches as they crossed the line virtually side-by-side giving the victory and overall win to Holmes.

BBMX

Logan Holmes (left) battles Colton Chamness in the second 125/250 Beginner, Division class. Their race went right down the finish line.

Moving to the top of the age ladder, in the 50+ Class Douglas Wollum was the Junior victor while Mike McCurry won the Intermediate group.

At the other end of the age scale are the Pee Wee racers, the youngest riders that race single speed bikes. The winners were Jayden Latham, Beginner, Gaven Giomi, Junior, Richard Duncan, Intermediate and the open winner was Jaiden Roberts.

Next step up the ladder are the 65cc bikes where riders must learn to shift. Not such an easy task but most master it quickly.

The 65cc winners are Austin Bernard, Beginner, Pierson Potratz, Junior while the Open winner was Hub Losey.

All in all a pretty good day and fortunately the medics were only needed a few times.

REPORTER’S NOTE: One thing new for this round was the first use of the transponder scoring system. As expected there were a few problems that delayed putting out the results. This couple with my being ill delayed the posting of this report.

I apologize for it being so late and next time we should be back to normal.

Now everybody gets a couple of weeks off unless they plan on racing in Northern California. Next race for BBMX is on April 6&7 out at Winnemucca.
