NIGHTINGALE, NV (Nov. 11) – MRANN, Motorcycle Racing Association of Northern Nevada, ended its 2018 season east of Fernley off the I-80 Nightingale exit. The Tank Slappers hosted the event under nice but cool weather.
The pits are located where the old U.S. 40 pavement ends east of the off ramp.
As everyone registered they were given a sticker to put on their number plates. It honored the memory of Bob “Moto Mouth,” Cavakis, a long time announcer at these events.
After a meeting the riders rode over to the starting area where they lined up according if they were experts, amateurs or novice racers. Each line launched individually and the second and third ones waited until the dust cleared from the start area to the first turn about a half-mile away.
One thing at stake was a $200 bonus for the first expert to reach a road crossing.
When the banner dropped the riders kicked their bikes to life and took off. Leading the charge was the Desert Fox himself, Dennis Belingheri, who was tuning up for the Baja 1000.
As the pack spread out his Baja teammate Stephen Tichenor claimed second as they left everyone in their dust. At the end of the first lap Belingheri led Tichenor by just over two minutes.
Behind the leaders came Brody Honea, who was four minutes behind Tichenor. Two minutes later and Willy Heiss ended his first lap while Ross Walton was only a minute in back of him.
To be classed as a finisher at a MRANN race a rider must complete one lap. If the loops are short enough then they must complete two of the three.
On this day no one was going to catch Belingheri.
“It just some rocks over rocks but I didn’t slow down on the second lap and I started doing a big bounce so I almost killed myself, Belingheri said. ” I pulled the hole shot, didn’t have any problems so I rode my race. I tried to take it easy so I didn’t crash and ruin my Baja trip and I did this two years ago. So start to finish two years ago and start to finish today so it was a really good ride.”
Then he thanked RMS, DDC, Chick Fil A, Sparks, Fly Racing, Rim Benders and his lovely wife. He added that in a week he’ll celebrate his 49th birthday.
One reason he rode this race was to tune up for the upcoming Baja 1000 event.
Asked about this he said, “That’s why I’m out here is to get warmed up for Baja.”
Coming in second, a couple of minutes later was his Baja teammate Steven Tichenor. For him this was a special day.
Asked how his race went he replied, “I loved it, good course. A couple of whoops that was good and on the second lap you knew where they were at so just got through them and to the really fun stuff. I never had an instance where I was confused so they did a really good job marking it.
“This was definitely a tune up for Baja. Finished this race, won the open class and overall championship today so really happy with that. Dennis and I had game plan to have a smooth day, finish first and second.”
Then he thanked Reno Motor Sports, DDC, Moto Graffiti, Chick Fil A, C & J Equipment, my wife, family and Tank Slappers for putting on such a good race.
The next rider that finished was Brody Honea, who would have been over two minutes behind Tichenor.
“I got a bad jump off the start, it was super dusty, had to make a few passes but I went the easy way on the hard/easy way on the first lap and was able to get a couple people,” he said. “Probably was running about fifth or sixth, picked off those people in the dust got all the way to third and stay in third tried to follow Dennis and Tichenor.”
Then he thanked Dyno Reno, MX Trophies, the Trail Blazers and Mika Bars.
Finishing 13th was the first amateur Tyler Fowler, not a bad race considering his line was launched and he had to first catch the experts then pass a bunch of them.
“The race was rocky,” he said. “Within the first couple of miles we caught the slower experts then I didn’t feel like I passed too many after that.”
Then he thanked his parents and others that came to watch him.
Finishing 21st overall was Arie Furlong the first Novice to complete both loops.
“The race was really good, there was a lot of rocks, a lot of whoops and a lot of sand. I just kept pushing the whole time and had a fun time,” he said. “My favorite part was definitely the rocky canyons, was just a place I could make up time, that’s where I really shine.”
Then he thanked his father, Chris at Dyno Reno, Reno Motor Sports, IMS and SF Threads for his uniforms.
Other winners were Jack Reader, first 40+ rider, Devin Walker, first 4-Stroke finisher and Danny Young, who was the first Over 50 rider. And of course there is also ageless Pete Prichard, who won the over 60 class.
Now that the season is over everyone, except those racing down in Baja, gets some time to relax and ride for fun. After the New Year there will be the awards banquet then it’s time to get ready for the 2019 season.
