RENO, NV (Sept. 22) – The 2018 Endurocross series visited here this weekend and brought its version of motorized mayhem to the Livestock Events Center. It was a wild night for riders and fans.
Ending the show was the Super Endurocross race with the top pros where the leader almost lapped the entire field.
“It was a really good race, I got the start and protected the inside, in bracket racing everyone kept taking me out and I didn’t want that to happen again,” Cody Webb said. “I had a really good line through the matrix, really risky and no one else had the nerve to hit it so that’s what got me the win.
“Lap traffic was really bad, they did a pretty good job getting out of the way but had a really big crash in the matrix and the rocks right after that and Colton (Haaker) made a lot of ground and so after that it was maintain this till the finish.”
Right after the start Webb wasn’t in the lead but he soon took care of that by the end of the first stage . Behind him hometown racer Ty Tremaine was moving forward on his all electric Alta motorcycle while further back points leader Colton Haaker was moving forward.
Up front Webb left everyone in his dust as he over came all the obstacles and technical parts of the track. Behind him the field those in the pack were having various kinds of success and challenges.
Tremaine did manage to hold second until Haaker got past him. Up front Webb was in a world of his own as he managed to get past lap traffic and overcome problems in the matrix, which was an up hill with a set of logs placed with varying distance between them.
In the end Webb, who is the defending series champion, scored the victory followed by Haaker and Tremaine.
Waiting for the post race podium Haaker said, “Good track, had some fast sections. I started in the second row on account of missing the No Joke lane in the heat race, which bummed me out. I started fifth then went to third so not so bad at that point Cody was riding super good up front, hitting some good line that I could match and I rode my hardest and in the end I was a bit short.”
Tremaine, who hails from Gardnerville, Nevada ended up third and was cheered by the crowd every time he want past a section.
“My start didn’t go to plan, I took the No Joke lane on the first lap, got it out of the way and started charging forward, picking off guys then I found myself in third and I just rode my own race, and the home town crowd was amazing,” he said.
Earlier there was a bracket race that gave the winner one extra championship point. Something that is critical when the season ends later this fall.
After the eliminations Ty Tremaine and Cody Webb faced off for the final round. Each race was only one lap so nothing was held back.
After some contact and an inside move Tremaine won while Webb was a distant second. It was the first victory for the all-electric Alta motorcycle.
When the gate dropped for the Amateur Open first on point was Josh Greco but Andrew Souza soon got past him. Back in the pack James Flynn and David Kamo were on the move.
Soon Kamo was on point but then Flynn got past and took control of the race. In the end the top three were Flynn, Kamo and Anthony Johnson in third.
Local racer Reece Honea ended up 10th overall.
There was an Amateur Open B main and despite his troubles during the heat races Dan Hayakawa ended up winning that event. Cole Wilton was second while Dayton, Nevada rider Jacob Kinkel was third.
There was a combined race where the top Trialcross riders rode with the Women. Topping the Trialcross was Josh Mouzakis on, of course, a Trials bike.
Going into the Women’s final Shelby Turner, two-time class champion and her friend Kacy Martinez were tied in points.
After the gate dropped Turner there was some side-by-sde racing that ended when Turner took the point. Behind her Kacy Martinez an Allie Dorsey were giving chase.
In the end Turner, from Barons, Canada took the victory followed by U.S. racers Martinez and Dorsey.
“It was a tough race, I just put my head down and kept trying. I know Kacy is coming for me, she’s going fast and I just want to stay ahead and defend my Number 1 plate. I had a lot of fun out there and that’s what I love to do is just racing my dirt bike so I excited to take home the win and extend my points lead,” Turner said later.
This past year she broke a leg and was only able to start racing again just a few days before the series first round. So far her title defense has been going well.
While the Super Expert main ended the evening show it began with the Vet Pro Main.
For points leader Destry Abbott, a name well known in off road racing had a few challenges to overcome. First was living at a lower altitude in Phoenix, Arizona and the second was undergoing Chemo treatment for LeuUp front right after the gate drop was Destry Abbot, who has made a name for him self in off road motorcycle events. He not only had to overcome the altitude, he lives in Phoenix, Arizona, but he’s been undergoing Chemo treatment for Leukemia.
When the gate dropped the veteran showed his fellow competitors that the race would be for second as he left them in his dust. In fact at one time he had a three-section advantage over second place.
After scoring the victory his post race interview was a bit entertaining as he was about out of breath.
Later, after catching his breath, he said, “I had a great start, and that was huge, just having fun out there. My speed’s good, of course my endurance is a long way from where I would like it to be but being 46 and riding is my therapy. It was a tough race and it took a little while to get going of course but I had fun and that’s my number one thing.
“As I’ve gotten older I don’t care if it’s a vet class, I’m enjoying being out there, Endurocross is super challenging, the heart though the roof and it’s just insane. I come off after a race and feel I’m about to pass out but the people were great, had a good night and it was fun.”
Looking at the points after Reno both Colton Haaker and Coty Webb are tied with Ty Tremaine about 20 back in third in the Super Endurocross class. David Kamo leads James Flynn by nine in Amateur open.
In Trailcross Coleman Johnson has a commanding lead while Shelby Turner is a scant three points ahead of Kacy Martinez. In the Vet Pro class Destry Abbot leads Dan Hayakawa by 11 points.
Next round for the series is on October 20 in Denver, Colorado. For further information please check the series website at, www.endurocross.com.
