RACING PREVIEW: AUG. 30 TO SEPT. 3

RENO, NV (Aug. 29) – As the stretch run begins for the season Racing Preview also reflects fewer cruises and a weekend with only one event in our area.

CRUISES:

  • Summit Racing in Sparks will have another of its Friday Cruise Ins starting at 5 p.m. and going until 8 p.m.

• Reno Cars and Coffee will have its first weekend of the month get together at the Starbucks on Kietzke. Starts at 10 a.m. and there is usually some great cars to see.

RACING (LOCAL AND REGIONAL):

  • This is an unusual time as none of the oval tracks in our area are having races this Labor Day Weekend. They will resume next week.

• The two-wheeled world is the only one having competition this weekend. Not far from Reno is the final mountain bike race at Sky Tavern on the Mt. Rose Highway. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. with racing to follow and at 8:30 a movie is shown.

AMA-NATC Mototrials

  • West of Reno on Boreal Mountain at Donner Summit is the series finale for the AMA-NATC Moto Trials National. This event takes a lot of skill, uses special motorcycles and is kind of like two-wheeled rock climbing.

The show begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday so if you want to see a very different kind of motorized event this might fit the bill.

• As usual all three motocross tracks in Northern California will be busy this weekend.

River Frong MX

River Front has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. on Thursday. Then the track hosts the final round of the Saturday Night Series; gates open at 2 p.m., practice begins at 4 p.m. with racing to follow.

Sunday has open practice from 9 until noon and all racers from Saturday are free. After that there is a BBQ and awards for the series are handed out.

Prairie City has practice sessions from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Over at E Street MX park there is practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):

• Once again Thursday is very slow but it’s also a good time to see events a race fan might have missed. One place is www.youtube.com to see either NASCAR, Formula One or Indy Car races while www.fanschoice.tv is another place to see previous races, especially if you’re a flat track fan.

• Friday gets off to an early start at 1:55 a.m. when ESPN2 broadcasts Formula One practice from Monza then at 5:55 a.m. ESPNU has the next practice session.

Starting at 11:05 a.m. NBC Sports has Xfinity and NASCAR Cup practice from Darlington.

• Saturday again begins early, at 5:55 a.m. as ESPN 2 has Formula One qualifying from Monza.

Over on NBC Sports starting at 9:35 a.m. is Xfinity qualifying followed at 11 a.m. with NASCAR Cup qualifying. Then at 12:30 the network airs the Xfinity race and at 4:30 p.m. Indy Car qualifying from Portland.

Finally at 1:30 p.m. Fox Sports 2 has NHRA’s Saturday Nitro Live from Indianapolis.

Over on the Internet www.fanschoice.tv at 3 p.m. has an AMA Flat Track event from Springfield. This is followed at 4 p.m. by a race from Langley Speedway then at 7 p.m. with the Hot Shot 50 from Tucson Speedway.

• Back to TV Land for Sunday as ESPN 2, starting at 6:05 a.m. has the Grand Prix of Italy at the classic Monza course.

Over on NBC Sports at noon is the Indy Car race from Portland, that used to be a regular part of the season. Now the series has returned to the City of Roses.

NASCAR

Then at 3 p.m. on NBC Sports there is another classic race this one from Darlington, “The Track Too Tough To Tame,.” NASCAR’s first super speedway has been the traditional home of the Southern 500 and once again the Cup drivers will face the challenge this odd shaped track has to offer.

Then at 7 p.m. drag race fans can watch Fox Sports 1 for NHRA Sunday Live.

• Back to the Internet and at 8 a.m. Fans Choice will stream the Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile II, part of the AMA Flat Track series. You can either watch it live or later when NBC Sports has it on during the week.

NHRA

• The extended weekend isn’t over with yet as there is a major event happening on Monday, the NHRA U.S. Nationals from Indianapolis.

Coverage begins at 8 a.m. over on Fox Sports 1 then at 10 a.m. switches to FOX for the final runs. A good showing is critical for those wanting to make the Count Down as well as those working to improve their positions in the stretch run.

That’s it for this Labor Day weekend. Please try and to get to a race if you can as there is nothing like seeing it live for color, speed and excitement. Have a safe weekend everyone.
