QUINCY, CALIF. (July 14) – This weekend the Nevada Pro Stock Association visited American Valley Speedway for the second time this season. For the pro stocks it was a time to remember and honor their former photographer with the Richard Wainscott Memorial Race.
Before racing began all the cars in all the classes did a couple memorial laps following a UTV driven by Wainscott’s daughter and granddaughter. Then it was time to get down to the business of racing.
After the dust settled winner Jeff Olschowka said, “Jesse Gonzalez and his wife Kari own this car, it’s a pretty old car and it gets around the track just fine. I’ve got to thank them for everything they do for me, letting me drive this car as Jesse can drive just as good as I can. He’s letting me do it and I appreciate it a lot.”
When the green waved Travis White led the charge with Olschowka right behind him. Unfortunately White lost the handle in Turn 2 and wound up sideways.
Most everyone, except one, got past White without clipping his car. However when you cause a caution you go to the back.
A full restart was ordered and on the green Olschowka took off but this time Richard Papenhausen, driving for Travis Petersen, gave chase.
After that there a series of cautions that had the officials cutting the event from the scheduled 30 to 20 laps. It took almost 15 minutes to do the first five laps.
One of the cautions eliminated Mike McMordie after his left front suspension was broken. On the next restart Olschowka took off but this time Donny Richardson and Papenhausen were giving chase.
The next caution came after a two-car tangle in Turn 2.
On the green Olschowka took off but a spin by Richardson brought out another caution erasing the leader’s advantage. There would be one more caution when James Gonzalez slowed for a problem.
By now only four cars were left and Olschowka stormed off to claim the victory followed by Papenhausen and White, who came back from a pit stop to finish third.
“We needed to be a little bit snugger but there were moments I thought I was going to start catching him. Then he would find something a little better than me but the car was good for the first time being in it,” Papenhausen said after the race.
One interesting thing about the car Papenhausen was driving; it only had three brakes but it seemed to work well.
When the IMCA Modified main began Papenhausen, in his regular mount took off chased by Galin Hainline and Chase Nieman. Behind the leaders Jeff Olschowka was slicing his way through the pack as he headed toward the front.
Soon Chris Nieman took over third with Olschowka not far behind him. As the laps progressed the top three motored around this bullring until there were three laps to go.
That’s when the car of Michael Kraft slowed and came to a stop on the back stretch bringing out a caution. His not pulling onto the infield erased any advantage the leader had and allowed everyone to close up.
On the restart Papenhausen, Nieman and Olschowka took off. Taking advantage of an opening Nieman used an inside move in Turn 4 to take the lead on the white flag lap.
At the end Nieman won followed by Papenhausen and Olschowka.
“I couldn’t really catch him (Papenhousen) as he was staying right there ahead of me but I knew on that start he was going to the top and I was going to get him at the bottom,” Nieman said after the victory. “It was good, we got the car working.”
Then he thanked Lonnie, Dan Fisher, Jack Smith, his grandmother, his father, Pit Stop Graphics.
After that Papenhausen said, “I didn’t need that yellow, I felt I rolled three and four on the bottom but I wasn’t that great on the bottom of one and two. I found something on top and thought I had pretty good momentum but Chris got around the bottom good.”
Right when the Sport Mod main began there was a three-car tangle at the start of the front straight. The car of Brittney Nieman got the worst of it but she was able to make the restart.
On the green Tom Froggatt led the charge with Tyler Eckels and Richard Longacre chasing him. Soon after that Nieman slowed and pulled on the infield just as Jared Morris spun in Turn 1 bringing out a caution.
Nieman would pit ending her night. On the restart of lap 3 another caution came out after Jason Emmot spun then two laps later there was another caution caused then Longacre spun after leading.
On the restart Craig Nieman was on point and roared off to claim the victory. Behind him Tyler Rogers finished second with Froggatt third.
The closest finish of the night was in the Hobby Stock main. On the green Rick Miller was on point with Jimmy Ray taking over second while being chased by Jim Eerie.
The first caution came out after one car spun and Shayna Robertson was unable to avoid him. Both she and Doug Weeks pitted although Robertson was the only one able to continue.
When racing resumed, Miller took off with Ray and Robertson, who was soon replaced when Brian Compton took over third.
Now the chase was on as Compton soon made his way into second and started pressing Miller.
One more caution on lap 8 slowed things down but when green waved again Miller and Compton took off and left everyone in their dust.
In fact they were almost side-by-side at the checkered flag but Miller had the advantage and claimed the victory.
The Mini Stock main was a duel between two drivers, Colton Lawson and Connor McMillian. They ran nose-to-tail for most of the 10-lap race and even swapped positions once.
In the end Lawson won the day with McMillian ending up second.
