STEAD, NV (June 24, 2018) – Northern Nevada Kart Club staged its third race of the season at Desert Park Raceway. The event was postponed and rescheduled due to a conflict with the Pylon Racing Seminar for the Air Races.
Despite the heat there was some pretty good racing during the afternoon. Veterans in the Senior LO206 Class staged the race of the day.
Asked if he knew how close his competitors were winner Jacob Ciari said, “No, I checked a couple of times but I knew they were back there, I just didn’t know how close. Towards the end they gave me some notice about how close they were. They kept me on my toes.”
Then he thanked, ‘these two knuckle heads, #24 and #95’ (Steve Dow and Alec Beaudoin.). “Without them I can’t go nearly as fast, you’ve got to have someone pushing you.”
When the field of 13 took the green Ciari jumped into the lead with Dow and Beaudoin in pursuit. On racer dropped out on the first lap so the field was cut down to an even dozen.
After several laps of nose-to-tail racing Ciari managed some breathing space but the duo in back of him weren’t giving up. In the last stages of the 14-lap affair they began to close on the fleeing leader.
Dow did manage to challenge a couple of times but Ciari hung on and kept the lead. Finally at the checkered the trio of Ciari, Dow and Beaudoin finished in that order.
Asked if he could have gotten the lead Dow said, “No, I needed help and in these under horsepower things everything’s got to be perfect. And sometime you’ve got a little help if they don’t make a mistake.”
Behind them Doug Hunter won the Master’s Class with Rich Phillips about a second behind him.
The chase of the day was in the Junior 2 main, which ended the day.
Up front Cain Fredricks took the green and proceeded leave everyone in his dust. Behind him Tanner Schultz was running solo in second.
Chase Dulude began the race at the back of the pack but within a lap or two was involved in a three-way battle for third. He soon was able to get the position then set his sights on Schultz but there was a bunch of distance to cover and time was running out.
While Fredricks was motoring off into the next zip code behind him the Dulude slicing about a half second off the gap between him and Schultz. A small mistake by Schultz allowed Dulude to close and finally they began a nose-to-tail duel for the spot.
In the end Fredricks won the war. At the end of an almost side-by-side charge to the checkered flag Schultz was second while Dulude was inches back in third.
After the post-race weigh in Fredicks, who is from Sacramento, said, “It was definitely a good day, we had a rough start to the weekend yesterday, couldn’t really find the setup because never been to this track. With all the help from Nevada Kart Sport, my dad and everyone whose there to support me we had a good weekend.”
Cain has actually raced at Desert Park before but not on the layout used this weekend. The track can be shortened or lengthened depending on what the club wants to use.
This time there were five F-125 Shifter karts on hand but the Grand Old Man of the class Mitch Kennedy dominated the race.
These karts use a standing start and when the green lights came on Kennedy was gone although at first Jeff Wamre was not that far behind. After that Kennedy motored off into the next zip code.
Behind them the race was really between Seth Huntley and Mike Faker. This was even more interesting as Huntley, the youngest driver in the field, was racing with a restricted motor.
At the checkered Kennedy notched another victory at the track with Wamre second. Behind them Huntley finished up less than a second ahead of Faker.
“It was a good race start to finish,” Kennedy said later. “My stuff was fast and that’s a good way to have it. That track’s good still, only fell off a couple of tenths in the main.”
Asked who he needed to thank Kennedy laughed and said, “Me.”
For the first time in a long while there were four TAG powered karts racing. Unfortunately Scott Andrews was unable to start the main so only three took the green flag.
In the end Dean Anddrews won the Senior class followed by Milas Mills while Mike Arnold was the lone TAG Master racer.
While four KA100s started the day the one of Luke Anderson wasn’t able to make the main.
Earlier Doug Hunter was eliminated in the first heat due to unavoidable contact with the kart of Zack Rivera. While it looked very bad as his kart flipped and landed on top of him, Hunter was able to race later.
In the main Rivera won while Mike McMullen ended up second overall.
Unfortunately rookie Collyn Hill was the only Junior 1 racer entered. But he still got his laps in so the race was actually an extended practice session for him.
Next race for the club will be on July 15 at Desert Park Raceway. For further information on the club please check their website at, www.nnkcreno.com.
