RENO, NV (Feb. 21) – Racing Preview this week has the second event in our area plus what is going on in Northern California and across the nation. Once again racing has returned to the scene, which means spring is just around the corner.
Locally the Reno Chapter of the Over The Hill Gang is hosting the return of the Sandbox Grand Prix. It’s held at the Fernley motocross track, runs both Saturday and Sunday and is for bragging rights only.
Saturday begins with open practice at 8 a.m. then at 1 p.m. motocross racing begins for minis, women, the youngest classes as well as the vintage and bomber bikes. The GP or team race begins at 3 p.m. and is for Mini Bikes, Women, Vintage and Bomber classes.
Sunday begins with sign ups starting at 7:30 a.m. and the first of the big bike motocross races start at 9 a.m. After those are completed teams pair up and the Grand Prix has a 2 p.m. start time.
In the last races two riders make a team and after racing a full lap, on an extended course they have to exchange a wrist band or something else before the second rider can take off.
It’s a fun event and great way to get the racing year started.
Over the hill there are issues with a pump at the E Street MX Park and no schedule for practice sessions at the time they article was posted.
Since weather is headed this way it is suggested a person either call the hot line at 775-265-7223 or check the website at www.repracingmx.com before heading to one of these tracks.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Just a few minutes after posting this I did get an update regarding the three Northern California tracks.
E Street MX has OTHG racing on Sunday. Riverfront MX has practice from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday while Prairie City has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Over on TV Land there is a bunch to watch although Thursday is pretty slim. One can check the schedule for re-runs at www.mavtv.com but at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has Race Hub.
This weekend Fox Sports 1 is carrying the load and the programs can also be seen of Fox Follow Live.
After last week’s opening rounds at Daytona the traveling show that is NASCAR visits Atlanta Motor Speedway. All three top series will be racing there this weekend.
Friday begins at 11:35 with NASCAR Cup practice followed by sessions for the Xfinity and Camping World Truck series. Then at 3:15 p.m. there will be qualifying for the NASCAR Cup racers.
Finally at 4 pm. Its Friday Nitro Lites as NHRA prepares for this week’s Arizona Nationals outside of Phoenix, Arizona.
Saturday begins at early at 6 a.m., again on Fox Sports 1, with Xfinity qualifying followed by the trucks qualifying. Then at 11 a.m. the Xfinity series races followed at 1:30 p.m. by the Camping World Truck Series race.
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross series is starting a three-race swing through the Southeast this week. Fox Sports 1, at 4 p.m., carries the race live from Tampa.
Finally at 8 p.m. the network will air NHRA qualifying from Arizona.
Sunday begins at 11 a.m. as FOX broadcasts the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race from Atlanta. While the speeds on this shorter track are about the same as Daytona the cars runs without restrictor plates so racing is quite a bit different.
Then at 3:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has the final rounds of the NHRA’s Arizona Nationals from Phoenix.
That’s it for this week and next week there will be even more racing around the country. Have a great weekend everyone.
