RENO (Aug. 16) – Made a mistake when I first posted this so have now corrected it. Still want to get this out a bit early as this Racing Preview has a lot of things to cover.
Locally it’s going to be a varied, huge weekend for race fans and some will have to choose what they will watch or participate in.
Friday is a huge day for many local motorcycle desert racers as the annual Best In The Desert Vegas to Reno race begins early in the morning and ends in Dayton, I believe around the Q& D pit that afternoon. The race can be followed at www.facebook.com/dirtlive2.
Unlike last year they are doing it all in one day.
Up in this area the Winnemucca Regional Raceway, starting at 7 p.m. is hosting a race. The IMCA racers will be competing for the winner’s prize, one thousand dollars.
Over at the Fernley 95A Speedway they are having another Dust in the Desert Poker Run. Although it runs on Saturday camping begins on Friday evening.
Also on Friday there is a Meet and Greet, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in Carson City at the south McDonalds. A good time to meet the women that will be racing in the All Star Invitational as part of the flat track racing event.
Saturday has several different types of events going on.
To the east the Lovelock Speedway will host another points race with a 7 p.m. start time.
Down at Fuji Park at the south end of Carson City the California Flat Track Association will be staging racing, the Western Flat Track Pro/Am in the rodeo arena. The pit gate opens at 11 a.m. with the amateurs starting to race at 3 p.m. while the pros have a 7 p.m. start to their races.
Not only will the women be racing for a $2,500 purse but several other classes will be racing for some serious money. Last year had some close racing and this year should be a encore of that.
About that same time at the Douglas County Fair Grounds there will be a tractor and truck pulling event. Unfortunately no time was listed on the poster.
That same evening, starting around 3 p.m. at Desert Park Raceway, the Northern Nevada Kart Clubs hosts the sixth annual Rick Jerome Memorial Night Race. The event honors one of the club’s founders and more information can be found on the club’s website, www.nnkcreno.com.
For the motocross crowd there is a race and practice sessions over in Northern California.
Round 6 of the Saturday night MX series will be at Riverfront. The track has practice Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. then on race day gates open at noon, practice at 2 p.m. sharp with racing to follow.
Prairie City has practice Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. then from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. North of there at the E Street MX Park that track has practice from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday an Sunday.
This week NASCAR is visiting the Bristol Motor Speedway and this signals that the regular season will soon be ending so the “play offs” can begin.
On Thursday NBC Sports starts off at 10 a.m. with Xfinity series practice from Bristol followed at 2 p.m. by the NASCAR America show. Then at 5:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 airs the Camping World Truck Series race from Bristol Motor Speedway.
NBC Sports gets Friday going at 7 a.m. with Cup Practice then at 4:30 p.m. has the Xfinity race from Bristol.
Once again on Saturday, the Pro Motocross series coverage is split between networks as the series moves to the Budds Creek course.
MAVTV has the first motos beginning at 10 a.m. then NBC has the second 450 moto at noon followed by the same day/delayed showing of the second 250 moto at 4 p.m. Over on Fox Sports 1, starting at 4 p.m. NHRA qualifying will be shown.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race from Bristol will air that same day at 4:30 p.m. on NBC. This race has been compared to having rocket ships in a bathtub so there is a bunch of action to be seen.
The Internet will also be showing races on www.fanschoice.tv.
Saturday’s menus starts at 4 p.m. with a race from Langely Speedway then at 4 p.m. shifts to Evergreen Speedway and ends at 7 p.m. with a race from Tucson Speedway. On Sunday at 10 a.m. the network streams a NASCAR Peak Mexico Series race.
Sunday starts at 11 a.m. on Fox Sports 1 with the NHRA event from Brainerd. Then at 11:30 a.m. NBC Sports has the Indy Car race from Pocono and finally CBS Sports also has an 11:30 a.m. start to a World Challenge event.
That’s it for this weekend and the menu has something for just about any race fan. Be sure, if you can, to get out and see a race live.
There is nothing like being at a race and seeing it live for action, speed, color and excitement.
