Fallon, NV (Aug. 12) – As the summer rolls one Rattlesnake Raceway keeps working through its season. This race however had a special occasion before the mains got going.
After the 250/500 Outlaw Kart main won by Jacob Dias driving a 500cc machine after he finally got past second place 250cc driver Ollie Gibbins.
Then Dan Dias and Angela Johnson got married on the front straight with announcer Davey Munoz doing the honors. After they both strapped into his Hobby Stock and would race together in Hobby Stock main.
On this night 14 cars took the green to start the Hobby Stock main and first on point was Jimmy Ray Huffmon followed by Royce Goetz. Behind them the Dan Dias was on a mission as his new bride riding in the passenger’s seat.
Before the first caution Dias claimed the lead but things slowed after a caution. On the restart Dias took off followed by Goetz and Richard Italiano.
Soon Scott Tenney took over third but again things slowed due to debris in Turn 4. On the restart Dias took off again while Goetz and Tenney were side-by-side disputing second place.
As the laps wound down Mikki Beuchat moved into a close second and began a determined challenge for the lead only to spin in the final turn, which dropped him all the way to 11th at the finish.
So ending this special night on a high note newly married Dias and his co-driving wife scored the victory while Cody Morris settled for second and Goetz ended up third.
“We got married on the front stretch then turned around and won our main event,” Dias said later. “The track was good, the car was good and 21 definitely has a motor but I think my car has a better corner and that the outcome. He tired taking me on the inside but was going too fast.”
Then he thanked his wife Angela, Johnson Family Racing and all my friends, family as well as “my little Ashley,” as well as thanking Rattlesnake Raceway for letting him have this wedding on the track.
When the IMCA main began Reldon Hatch was on point with Sample and Don Childs disputing second place. Unfortunately about a lap later Sample misjudged how wet the bottom was and slid up into Childs’ car, which caused a caution.
Sample was sent to the back while Childs limped into the pits and was out of the race.
On the restart Hatch led again followed by Fred White and Dave Sciaronni. Soon White took over the lead but the race was stopped to check on Hatch after he slammed into the wall at the entrance of Turn 4.
While Hatch was uninjured the same can’t be said for his car.
On the restart Sample was second but soon changed that as he took over the lead coming out of Turn 4 and just rocketed away to the victory. At the finish Sciaronni was second ahead of Alec Childs and Craig Maestretti.
When asked about the IMCA race winner Cory Sample said, “Not very good, the water on the bottom of the race track really sucked and you really couldn’t get racing right away. I tried to roll through it, thought it was dry enough then we got in the water and slid across the racetrack and got into Don (Childs). After that everyone was kind of timid and it seems the outside was the lane to be in. I never wanted to go there but it seemed to be the place to be.”
Then he thanked his father, girlfriend Vickie and pit guy Kyle.
Only three cars were in the Street Stock main and Mikki Beuchat made short work of that as he drove to victory. Due to Trevor Quell spinning and ending up third, Crystal Kotney was able to handle the slick track and finished second.
Josh Evans and Shane Boyd led the charge when the Gen-X main began but soon the race was stopped after the car of Josh Evans lost a wheel in Turn 4.
Once racing resumed Boyd was again on point but under heavy pressure from Suzie Schmitt. Then there was another caution after the car of Sienna Burgess lost power and had to be pushed to the pits.
On the restart Boyd took off while Wilhelm used an outside pass in Turn 2 to take over second dropping Schmitt to third. They finished in that order.
Kevin Reuter briefly led the Mod Mini main but things slowed after Suzie Schmitt spun in Turn 4. Once racing resumed Tom Vukovich too over the point but soon had Stephen Crook on his back bumper.
Then Schmitt slowed after her hood flew up and blocked the view of what was in front of the car. After track workers pushed the hood down she limped back to the pits.
On the restart Crook went for it and took over the lead going into Turn 3. While two more cautions slowed the race it was all Crook’s as he ran away from the pack to score the victory.
Vukovich and Reuter were second and third while Steve Singley ended up fourth ahead of fifth place Jesse James.
Now the track is dark until September 26 then the Mud Drags return as does the annual Hobby Stock Challenge race.
