DESERT PARK RACEWAY: NNKC ROUND 5

Despite the heat there was a pretty good go kart race on Sunday.

STEAD (JULY 2) – Desert Park Raceway was alive with go kart racing just one week after the Northern Nevada Kart Club hosted the KPX series. Due to the heat and 4th of July weekend the kart count was down but those racing for points and fun still showed up.

And this time some of the youngest drivers staged the race of the day with one competitor earning her very first main event victory. And she added an explanation of drafting.

NNKC

Heavyn Hill scored her first ever main event win in Junior 1.

“That was awesome, that was like the best time I’ve very had,” 11-year-old Heavyn Hill said after winning the Junior 1 main. “When you come out of 9 you stay behind the person you’re in front of an its like a wind breaker so you’re not hitting as much wind as they are. So you have more of a run and can pass them. It’s my first win and it’s exciting. I need to thank my grandpas.”

When the race started Hill was on point then gave it up to Korey Sander as they exited Turn 2. Right behind them was Landon Kwapich and it soon turned into a three-way duel for the lead.Hill drafted back into the lead as they roared down the front straight. In fact drafting was used by all three during the race.

Then both Hill and Kwapich swapped the lead several times, sometimes twice a lap. Once Kwapich used a double cross over as they exited Turn 2 to take the point and Hill responded by taking the lead again.

During all of this Sander would get a huge head of steam exiting Turn 2 and get close to the leaders but it because a two-kart duel.

Then coming off the Turn 5 hill there was contact and Kwapich spun giving Hill the lead.

Asked about that she said, “I came off the hill faster than the kid in front of me so I guess I bumped him and spun him.”

Still Hill wasn’t in the clear as Sander kept her honest but she held on to claim her first win. That first victory is always something special for any racer.

The other race of the day came in the 206 main that combined both the Master and Senior classes.

When the green waved Doug Hunter and Steve Dow took off with Dow taking the point on the second lap. At that time he was leading a five-kart train running nose-to-tail.

Soon Jacob Ciari took over the lead with Alec Beaudoin inches behind him followed by Hunter and Michael McMullen.

Soon it became a two-kart duel for the lead between Ciari and Beaudoin as they both tore around the track. Behind them was another battle developing between Master driver McMullen and Senior racer Kelly Chinander.

At Chinander had the advantage but as the race progressed McMullen, would win the Master Class, soon caught her and the chase was on. Up front the duel between Ciari and Beaudoin continued.

In the end Cairi won the overall victory, as well as the Senior class, by inches as Beaudoin was right behind him at the finish. Not far behind the two leaders Chinander was able to claim third just inches ahead of McMullen, who was the Masters class winner.

During the 206 main winner Jacob Ciari (13) and runner up Alec Beaudoin were usually this close together.

” He (Beaudoin) made sure I knew he was there,” Cairi said after the victory. “It was tiring, I couldn’t make any mistakes for sure. Alec here in second place was on me the entire time and if I made one error he’d be right on top of me. I have to thank my pit boss so to speak Riley, she’s the reason why I’m out here, doing what I’m doing because she supports me.”

The after taking his helmet off Masters winner McMullen said, “That was just awesome, so much fun. You realize that Kelly weighs 20 pounds less than I do and she does a good job and is a good racer. I thank the Lord all the time, kept me safe and let me have fun, what more could you ask for.”

The biggest class was Junior 2 where eight took the green. After the KPX events parents and the club agreed to move the rolling starts closer to Turn 1 so the racers didn’t have such a long time to build up speed.

Before that race could begin the field had to be stopped and karts moved around into their proper order. Once that was accomplished the field was sent on its way.

This was to be Issac Bourque’s day as he just took off and left everyone in his dust. But behind him there was a three way battle for second that soon became a two-way fight until everyone spread out.

And there was a two-kart duel for fifth going on as well.

Behind Bourque, who won Chase Dulude finished a strong second as he held off third place Bryce Berry while Tanner Schultz, Wyatt Sander and Deeahmee Malone took the next three spots.

“Practiced all day yesterday and Rodney Rivera worked on the kart all night Friday as it was all bent up from KPX and he fixed it,” Bourque said after the race. “I want to thank Rodney River, my dad, my uncle and everybody that came out her to support me today.”

There was only one Kid Kart driver that showed up as many were probably on family trips. No matter how many or how few show up the club makes sure they get their laps so Jeremiah Nobles had a couple of nice sessions to improve his skills.

The F-80 shifter main began with a bang for Ryan Holm as he hit the front straight barrier soon after the start. So his day was done.

In the field was Oregon driver Neil Carvalho, who was driving a TAG kart, which needs a rolling start. So the F-80 shifter karts were sent off before Carvalho arrived on the front straight since they use a standing start.

Up front Jeremy Holm was on point then slowed which allowed his father Kurt and Neil Carvalho to get past. Later Jeremy sped up and would again take the lead an claim the victory with his father and Cardvalho coming in second and third.

After the race Jeremy Holm said, “Just having some fun, a guy (Carvalho) came Oregon today and just wanted to have fun. It’s more fun to have a big lead when there’s a lot of people but when there is no one to race and not any challenge it’s no fun.”

Then he thanked his mom Mary, his dad and brother for getting him out there.

Now the track will be dark, except for testing until NNKC hosts its next race June 23. Those wishing more information on the club and their events should check the website at, www.nnkcreno.com.
