Racing returned to Fernley this weekend at the Wadsworth/Fernley Lion’s Motocross Track.
FERNLEY (May 14) – Battle Born MX celebrated Mother’s Day by returning to the Sandbox as its known for round 4 of its spring series. The hosting club this time was the Old Timer’s Motorcycle club.
Despite cool temperatures and some wind around 300 riders showed up to compete on Sunday.
“Yea, got the sweep, first in 450 Pro, got the hole shot and checked out,” Jesse Sanchez said after winning his second moto. “I was charging the entire time, trying to see how fast I could go and ended up getting the win. They fixed the track up, it was awesome, can’t thank the crew enough for putting this on and I’m just stoked to be out here.”
Then he thanked Cody Crumett and everyone that supports him.
When the gate dropped for the first 250/450 moto Billy Adams had the hole shot but he soon lost the point and would finish second to Sanchez. The next time around Sanchez got the hole shot with Adams second but that was short lived as he went down hard after finishing the first lap.
Fortunately Adams wasn’t hurt as now veteran Tony Evans was in second and doing his best to try and catch the fleeing Sanchez. In the end Sanchez prevailed with Evans a solid but distant second while Chris Paras won the 250/450 Intermediate class and T-Mo Moore was the lone 125/250 pro.
One of the races of the day came during the combined 85cc Supermini and Women’s race. Both are combined with the Supermini group starting first.
But the women, well two sisters really, put on a show.
In their first moto Shami Potratz took off first with sister Sedanna Losey on her back fender. Round and round they went, over the jumps and tearing through the corners as they battled and, in the end, Potratz won that contest.
When the gate dropped for their second moto Losey was ready and got the jump on her sister. Still it was no cakewalk as she was tailed the entire race by Potratz.
In the their combined finishes Losey won the day and after the race both sisters congratulated each other on a good race.
Then, while catching her breath Losey said, “I said I did it when it counts for that second moto. We’ve done that once before and I ended up with the overall, makes all the hard work worth it in the end. It was a good race, we had a good battle, she was right on me the whole time, I could hear her the whole time.
“Same thing with the first moto, I was right on her the whole time but took a little spill on the last lap. So I did it when it counts.”
Then she thanked Moto Source, her husband for his hard work keeping her bike ready and her two brothers, Butch and Scott for working on the bikes.
In the Supermini Class it was a runaway as Casey Carmichael won both motos with Demetre Proutsos and Trevor Hargett ending up second and third.
After taking the checkered flag Carmichael said, “It was pretty fun, just trying to find some good lines so I don’t get tired and worn out. I need to thank my parents, Amy and my Grandma.”
Race 4 combined five classes of riders so while there is an overall finish as well as individual class finishes.
Winning the second moto was 30+ Expert Jeff Simas, who commented after taking the checkered flag, “It was good, had a lot of fun and my bike works fairly good out here. I need to thank TRS Consulting, Big Valley Honda, Tech One Designs, Fast House, X-Brand Goggles and Guts Racing.”
Finishing second in second moto was, 38+ Master rider Scott Stillmock, who a little bit different take on which bike to race.
“It’s fun, I don’t ride as much as I used to but once the gate drops I remember how do everything again,” he said. “I got out front and people underestimate my little 350 against all the 450’s and it’s an amazing bike. You can run it up higher in the RPM’s and it slows down quicker in the corners as it doesn’t have as much inertia, feels like a 250F weight wise but has enough grunt to run with any 450.”
He also mentioned that he plans to open a new shop in Fernley then thanked Reno KTM for their support. And he added that his daughter Hope, who flew in that morning, was able to not only attend the event but raced as well.
In the 45+ Expert class Rich Thorwaldson won but taking two seconds was snowboard legend Shaun Palmer while “Hole Shot,” Layne Kolbet was third. Brett Fay was the 30+ Intermediate winner and the 38+ Intermediate winner was Chad Olson.
With a rider’s combined finishes used to determine their final placing a moto winner doesn’t always wind up first overall. This happened in the second moto for the 125/250 Junior and Intermediate classes.
After taking the checkered flag Garrett Hueftle, who won but ended up second overall in the Intermediate class said, “I knew he was closing in but I didn’t do so good in the first moto so didn’t get the sweep.”
Then he thanked his parents, Moto Source and Garnet.
In the end T.J. Taylor’s very close second place gave him the overall Intermediate victory while Ethan Lewis used his runner up finish in the Junior division to claim the overall victory.
Judging by the turn out the future of motocross in our area looks bright indeed. One example was the 50cc, or Pee Wee, Beginner class that has 19 riders listed while the Junior division has 4.
These youngsters are earning their racing spurs and ride on a short course. And when they race there are many adults not only cheering them on but rushing to help any rider that happens to fall.
Joseph Mitchell was the Pee Wee Junior winner while the Beginner winner was Richard Duncan. Moving up to the 65cc bikes, where the riders have to learn how to shift the winners were, Skyler Roberts in Beginner, Connor Gaarenstroom in Juniors, Sam McCord the Intermediate winner and Owen Bills the Open winner.
Another indicator was the 85cc Beginner Class as it had to be divided in half with 16 starting in one group while 15 made up the other. These youngsters are moving up and some will join the big bike group in the next few years.
The 85cc winners were Garrison Dyrr, Division 1 Beginner and Division 2 winner Aren Duncan. Taking the Junior and open class was Demetre Proutsos while Casey Carmichael was the Supermini winner.
In that next group up the ladder the 125/250cc Beginner Class also had to be divided with one division starting 15 riders while the other had 13 in the gate.
During the day some riders went down but no one earned a ride to the hospital.
Now the Sandbox is quite for a spell as the next round of the series moves to Winnemucca on the weekend of June 3 and 4.
