Despite the rains and weather racing season is fast approaching and this first preview highlights the two groups that gets the year going.

The season preview is for the motorcycles and go-karts as they are about to begin their seasons. No matter what the weather brings folks are getting prepared for the fast approaching competition.

Kicking off this season is MRANN and those that race motorcycles on the desert. That first race, the 19th annual Hare & Hound is this coming weekend.

It’s the Battle Born 100 presented by the Trail Blazers motorcycle club. As usual the Pee Wees start things rolling on Saturday followed by the V Women, Mini bikes, Vintage and Bombers with a team race finishing the day’s action.

Then on Sunday morning the big bikes challenge the course which is made up of a 52-mile and 48-mile long loop. To be classed as a finisher a rider must complete one loop.

Can the Desert Fox, Dennis Belingheri, score his ninth victory in MRANN’s first race of the season? We’ll know on Sunday.

Last year’s overall champion Dennis Belingheri is going for his ninth victory in this race.

The series has two races in March followed by the next in April and the spring series ends in June. This year there are three races in the fall, one in September with two in October.

Motocross in this region has gone through some trying times lately. In fact it came close to disappearing a few years ago and is again challenged with the loss of the Exit 28 track.

However some concerned individuals have created a new sanctioning body, Battle Born MX or BBMX. And with the help of three clubs their season begins the weekend of March 11 and 12.

Each of the three clubs, the Over The Hill Gang and Old Timers MX and that based in Winnemucca will host two races each. The Sandbox or Wadsworth-Fernley Lion’s Club Motocross Track in Fernley will be the site of four races while the two in Winnemucca are at a track just outside of downtown.

And during the spring the Old Timers will host one of their national rounds (Not sure of the date yet.) while the OTHG should have its traditional national round on Memorial Day weekend. So motocross racers in our area will actually have eight events to compete in.

Besides those two national events there are three more special ones coming to this area.

The Amsoil Arenacross series is finally returning to Reno’s Livestock Events Center in March.

On March 24 to 26 the Amsoil Arenacross series will return to Reno’s Livestock Events center after an absence of several years. The pros race Friday and Saturday nights while amateurs get their turn on a track altered for safety on Sunday.

Once again, at the end of April, the Comstock will echo with the sound of motorcycle racing as the Virginia Grand Prix brings riders from across the west.

A month later the Virginia City Grand Prix will bring racers from all across the west and some even farther to compete in this classic race on the Comstock.

Fuji Park will again host the California Flat Track racers in later August.

Another special event will be the return of flat track racing the weekend of August 23rd to Carson City at Fuji Park. Last year it was a sell out so 500 more seats have been added.

Since it’s an outlaw event there are more classes racing on this tight bullring than are usually found at a sanctioned flat race event. Last year the series had its biggest turn out of pros and the afternoon into evening was a blizzard of heats and main event.

All in all it’s going to be a very active time for motorcycle racers in our region.

Sprint go-kart racers from the Northern Nevada Kart Club are also getting ready for their season at Desert Park Raceway in Lemmon Valley.

Drivers with the Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC) will be getting ready for the start of their season.

They’ll start things rolling on March 12 with the annual tune up race. No points are only the line but it’s a time to shake off the rust and get ready for the season, which begins on April 2nd.

Their regional event will be the KPX race the weekend of June 24/25 and later in the summer the club will host its annual night race.

That’s it for these two groups of racers. Next Season Preview I’ll highlight the oval tracks and if possible the drag racing season at Top Gun Raceway.

I have included the schedules of all three groups at the very end of this article. They can be dragged over to a person’s desktop for easy reference.

OTHER RACING NEWS:

• Although this is late, the motocross track at Prairie City will be open for practice from noon until 5 p.m. Then it might be time for a rider to take their significant other out to a nice dinner.
