As spring gets closer racing is starting to heat up even though the Super Bowl will put a damper on some things.
Racing preview this week has more reruns on television but there is a bunch of live events to keep most race fans happy. And some of those events aren’t too far away from this area.
Also need to note that when I post times they are in the Pacific Coast area. If you’re an overseas reader we are eight hours behind GMT or UTC, both are the same thing.
Currently if E Street MX Park will be open for practice is up in the air. There will be an update on Thursday and I believe maybe on Friday as a storm is slated to hit that area.
The hotline to check on the track is, 775-265-7223. Be sure to call before heading over there.
Another upcoming event in our area is the annual Virginia City Grand Prix. This classic race is now taking applications and the earliest postmark has to be February 1st so as of today they are good to do.
You can find those applications at, www.vcgp.com.
South of us the annual Best in the Desert Parker 425 is being run this weekend. It started today but the main racing will be on Saturday and Sunday.
Down in Southern California the Glen Helen Motocross track is having the Dirt Extravaganza, which is also the first Mammoth Qualifier. Practice on Saturday with racing, apparently using a grand prix format, on Sunday.
Another huge event is the start of the annual King of the Hammer’s event. Many of these racers will compete later in the year up at the Wild West Motorsports Park.
Hammer Town located on the Means Dry Lake Bed in Johnson Valley opens Friday with qualifying for the 4600 and UTV classes. Later at 6 p.m. they will start the King of the Motos part 1.
Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. the King of the Motos events begin. It’s a wild event that combines desert and rock climbing in one race.
On Monday, at 6 p.m. there is the Vision X Shootout presented by KMC. Then Tuesday begins at 8 a.m. with qualifying for the limited classes and the 4400 cars.
At 8 a.m. Wednesday the Can-Am KOH UTV race begins and later there will be more qualifying, probably on a separate course.
Next week I’ll have the remainder of the schedule posted.
You can watch the events either by going to www.ultra4racing.com and check the “live,” section. Or the races can also be watched later or maybe live on www.youtube.com where you need to find the Heavy Metal Concepts channel and subscribe to it.
Over on TV most of what will be on is in the “Rerun Zone,” but there are a couple of live events to watch.
On Thursday www.mavtv.com is shouldering most of the load with many reruns. They start at 11 a.m. with a Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League event followed by Indiana Sprint Cars the Super Cup Stock Cars. Later, at 3 p.m. there is Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt races and at 4 p.m. Speed Sport 2016.
Friday is pretty barren except for www.fanschoice.tv as at 3:30 p.m. they stream qualifying and heat races from Tucson Speedway for this week’s 4th annual Chilly Willie 150 race.
MAVTV begins Saturday with Race Line at 9 a.m. then at 2 p.m. the network airs AMA Pro Flat Track racing followed by Lucas Oil ASCS races.
Over on Fanschoice.tv, at 5 p.m. they stream the Chilly Willy 150 mains from Tucson Speedway.
And this week the Supercross round in Oakland will be shown on Fox Sports 2 with a 4 p.m. starting time. If you can’t get that station then next week you can see the 250 and 450 mains on www.youtube.com.
CBS Sports gets Sunday going at 8 a.m. with a Snocross event then at 11 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has a replay of an Arenacross event followed at 1 p.m. by two hours of Monster Truck action.
At noon MAVTV has Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing followed by the Pro Pulling League.
And finally at 3 p.m. CBS Sports also broadcast a Lucas Oil Drag Boat racing event.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
If you are a race fan, and it doesn’t matter which type there is a very special thing you need to do.
Last year the EPA intended to come out with a ruling where a car designed for street use would be prohibited from being altered into a racecar. The RPM bill now introduced in the Senate would stop this over reach.
To help this effort please go to www.sema.org and click the “RPM Act 2017,” this will send you to a page where you can register your support for this bill.
That’s it for this weekend and once the Super Bowl is behind us racing will begin to take off again.
