SUNDAY WAS A LITTLE MILDER AND SLIGHTLY COOLER FOR THE SECOND DAY OF THE RACES.
SPARKS, NV (AUG 14) Lucas Oil Off Road Series ended its two-day visit to the Wild West Motorsports Park on a slightly cooler day than Saturday. But on the track the racing was as hot as ever.
“Yesterday before the race I was told I had never won Pro 2 here and I was little bit surprised,” Rob MacCachren said after winning Sunday’s race. “We came here with a fast truck, learned some stuff at Glen Helen, brought it over here and the truck was really, really quick. I’m very happy and we increased our points lead over Jeremy and A.J.”
Then he thanked the fans as well as sponsors Rock Star Energy, Makita Power Tools, BF Goodrich Tires, Vision Wheels and Fox Shocks.
When the Pro 2 field was launched MacCachren had Carl Renezeder and R.J. Anderson close behind him. Jeremy McGrath was fourth ahead of Brian Deegan.
After a caution slowed everyone down MacCachren led the charge again but now McGrath took over third then second while Renezeder began to fall back.
Behind the lead duo Deegan and Anderson were dueling for third. During a late caution due to debris on the front straight, Renezeder pulled off with three to go.
McGrath seemed to have a possible brake fire but he gave them time to cool down on the slow laps, which seemed to do the trick.
On the green MacCachren took off with McGrath on his back bumper and they would finish in that order. After a close battle, Anderson ended up third ahead of Rodrigo Ampudia.
Two drivers, Eric Fitch and Deegan failed to report to post race tech and were disqualified.
After crashing Saturday and not having a good run McGrath was asked about his weekend.
“Today’s race is huge, we needed this as redemption,” he said, “I crashed the truck yesterday in qualifying and man, we needed every second to finish the thing before the race. Hats off to the JM2 guys, ever since we’ve been here they’ve been working their tails off, nonstop. It’s very appreciated and very nice to finish out the weekend with a great truck.”
In those last laps McGrath allowed he was on MacCachren’s bumper hoping he’d make a mistake but that never happened. As for the brake fire he felt it was a case of blown seals as they seemed fine to him.
When the Pro 4 main began Doug Fortin lead the charge with Carl Renezeder and Greg Adler giving chase. Then Renezeder took the point while Kyle LeDuc was moving toward the front.
Behind the leader Doug Fortin and Kyle LeDuc dueled over second place. Eventually Fortin spun bringing out a caution after he probably clipped a k-rail.
On the green Renezeder took off with Fotin, LeDuc and Rob MacCachren giving chase. The order reverted to the previous lap due to when the caution came out..
With nine to go the top three were close but Leduc stopped on track after getting a flat then headed for the pits for a new tire and Fortin also pitted.
When racing resumed Renezeder took off followed by Eric Barron and MacCachren with Fortin slipping back to fourth. Then another caution came out when Adler had contact with a k-rail and had to pit.
With six to go MacCachren was third with LeDuc right behind him. That’s when disaster hit for Renezeder.
Charging into the left-hander at the top of the hill he hit a rut and rolled his truck several times. Fortunately he was all right but the same couldn’t be said for the truck.
On the restart Barron, now in the lead took off but LeDuc jumped pas him into the lead while MacCachren took over second.
Later LeDuc explained his throttle stuck wide open going up the hill so he had to lift and that let MacCachren take the lead while Barron too over second.
In the end LeDuc got a left front flat but he carried on and finished third after almost losing it in a turn due to the flat. Barron would end up second behind MacCachren.
On the podium MacCachren said, “We’re really working hard with our truck and all my guys really do a lot of work. This class is super competitive and I told my guys this was like a desert race as the ruts were getting big and that’s what happened to Carl. He threw it in there and had to.”
Then he thanked his sponsors as well as the fans for coming out and invited them to attend the next rounds of the series.
As for Barron, he was happy to be on the podium
“It was awesome, hope everyone had fun watching that one. We’ve got a lot of stuff on my truck now and it’s all due to my team and sponsors. The Toyota is just screaming out there and have to thank Mickey Thompson Tires, Icon Suspension and the fans for coming out.”
Well when it came to the Pro Lite the word was Turn 1, or Calamity Corner as the announcers began to call it.
The first attempt at a start ended when one truck ended upside down and Broc Dickerson had to pit.
Next attempt ended when Sarah Burgess got caught in the melee and rolled her truck in Turn 1. Sadly she was unable to continue and retired.
Then on the third attempt two trucks got locked together coming down from the ski jump causing a caution.
Around this time one truck headed for the hot pits at high speed and almost went over the side when he swung on the pit entrance road.
When the second lap began Brock Heger and Jerett Brooks led the charge. Behind them there was a four-wide rush through Turn 3 but somehow those drivers all made it through.
Brandon Arthur finally took over third while behind him Ryan Beat, who started back in the pack was moving forward.. The next caution came due to a chunk of debris on the front stretch.
With eight to go the field took off again and it was a three-wide charge into Turn 1 but this time they made it. Then Jeff Hoffman moved into third with an outside pass in Turn 3.
Up front Brooks was keeping the pressure on Heger but their duel was short as there was another caution when a truck stalled in Turn 4 and another at the top of the hill.
On the restart Heger took off with Brooks, Jeff Hoffman, Jeremy Stenberg and Beat, who had climbed into fifth place and soon would be in third. Then things slowed again when a truck stalled in Turn 1.
With five to go the green waved and Beat took off, gained second and set his sights on the leader.
There would be another caution that saw Heger head for the pits with a flat tire. That handed the lead to Beat, who led Hoffman, Stenberg and Arthur with four to go.
Taking the white flag Beat had the point but Stenberg was closing in but it wasn’t enough and they finished in that position. Behind them Hoffman was third and Brooks fourth.
Celebrating his third victory of the year Beat said, “That was a crazy race, it seemed like it was never going to end. I’m glad it ran that long as it gave me time to get my stuff together and stop worrying about what was behind me. Once I did that, I started picking guys off, found myself sitting third on a restart and figured now is the time to go.”
Then he thanked Maxis Tires, Rock Star Energy, Gibson Exhaust and Fox Shocks among the list of his sponsors.
For Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg it was a come from behind charge to second.
“I had my work cut out for me as we qualified dead last and I got disqualified from qualifying as I was so made figuring out my truck I forgot to report to tech,” he said. “But it’s good, my team’s been putting in some work and today we just threw something at it and it worked. Have to give a shout out to Steve Drew, Jessie and Francisco, those dudes busted their butts this week and we made it work.”
Then he thanked MAVTV, Stronghold and Fox for their support.
Kevin McCullough was on point when the Pro Buggy main began. Garrett George and Darren Hardesty were chasing him as they came down from Turn 1.
Early on Bud Ward had to pit but then returned while Darren Hardesty also had to pit apparently with motor problems.
Since there were no cautions before the halfway point in the 14-lap race a competition caution was displayed and the field bunched up. On the restart McCullough took off with George, Eliott Watson and Valentine after him.
The next caution came when a buggy was upside down at the top of Turn 1. Once the track crew got it back on its wheels the driver fired motor, which put out a lot of smoke, then he rejoined the fray.
With three to go there was another caution when another buggy wound up with its left wheel over the inside Turn 3 k-rail. Once that was cleared the racing resumed.
In the final laps McCullough pulled a gap as he steamed off to his fourth victory of the season but behind him George and Valentine were dueling for second.
Rounding the final corner it was a drag race down the hill to the finish line where George just beat Valentine at the line for second.
On the podium winner McCullogh said, “That car’s been that fast before but it’s rare, sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not. I’ve done that in Reno before where we’ve won flag to flag but it sounds like that had an epic battle back there, which kind of helped me sneak away.”
Then he thanked everyone that helps him as well as sponsors BF Goodrich Tires and Stapleton Roofing.
After some contact early in Turn 1, Garrett George put on a charge to the finish but had to hold off his friend Mike Valentine to take second.
“Had my head on straight, my Mickey Thompson Tires were hooking up, Red Line Motor was pulling,” George said, “I came down, got by Cling then me and Valentine were pushing as hard as we could push. We both threw away that last corner for the drag race, which was so epic.”
Right after the Mod Kart main began one driver over cooked it in Turn 1 and rolled his car. Once the safety team rolled it back on its wheels the driver took off.
Up front Hailie Deegan, “The Dirt Princess,” was on point with Christopher Polvoorde second and Saturday’s winner Trey D. Gibbs third.
The only other caution came when Mia Chapman’s kart stalled and she needed a push start.
Up front Deegan was off and slowly extending her lead. Behind her Polvoorde made a mistake and allowed Gibbs to take over second but he didn’t have enough time to catch the flying Deegan.
After winning the race she said, “We’re stoked to be back on top of the box, that’s our goal for this weekend and to et the points lead back. Hopefully we can take it into Elsinore and extend it even more.”
Then she thanked God for keeping her safe, her family as well as sponsors NOS Energy Drink, Gibson, Traxxas and anyone else that helps her.
Asked about the race Gibbs said, “It’s not a first place but a second and we’ll take it any day. We’ve just got to be consistent for the rest of the races and try and catch Hailie for the championship.”
He also related how he and Polvoorde had a battle for second until there was a mistake that allowed him to take second.
“Was making up real estate but just didn’t have enough time,” he said.
Then Gibbs thanked his whole family, Bilstein Shocks, TV Engineering, Mod Kids USA and Rugged Radios.
With two more weekends to go in the season the series moves on to Lake Elsinore for the weekend of Sept. 23-24.
These races are shown both on MAVTV and CBS Sports. But if a person doesn’t have these channels there is a new way to see all types of racing on demand. It’s www.lucasoilracing.tv. Not only was this event streamed live but viewer can see it at a later date as this is a demand service and is also by subscription.
This reporter wants to give a shout out to the track crew at the Wild West Motorsports Park. For the second time this year they’ve faced high temperatures as well as wind.
The result was near constant watering to keep the track surface as dust free as possible as well as some ripping the corners so the racers had better traction. For them it was two long days of constant effort but they made it work.
