LOVELOCK SPEEDWAY: FRONTIER DAY RACES

This weekend an annual event was held at a oval track in Northern Nevada.

LOVELOCK, NV (July30) – Lovelock Speedway hosts two night of races during the town’s annual Frontier Days that honors its founding. This year the racing card had IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stock, 360 Sprint Cars and Dwarf Cars.

“We haven’t won all year so got this new DeVilbiss car and we’ve been working, working on it every time we’ve had it out and its getting better and better but we’re not 100% yet but we’re close,” Joel Myers said after winning Saturday’s IMCA 40-lap main. “In the main event, Cory getting two flats, I mean he’s hard to beat, almost impossible unless he had mechanical problems. We finally got a win on this car, got the monkey off my back this year so hopefully we can come back and win some more.”

Then he thanked sponsors DeVilbiss Racing Chassis, CT Racing, and Lucas Oil as they backs his son.

Lovelock Speedway: Joel Myers, IMCA winner.

Joel Myers scored his first IMCA victory in his new car during Saturday’s Frontier Day races.

When the green waved and sent the dozen cars on their way local J.D. Jurad was on point until Elko driver Andy Strait took the lead.

A spin in Turn 2 by Trevor Gurley slowed things and on the green both Jurad and Strait disputed the lead. Unfortunately Strait drifted up allowing Alec Childs to take second ahead of Cory Sample.

After another caution caused when Walter Ball spun racing resumed. About that time there was a three-wide charge in which Sample suffered two flat tires and maybe some other damage.

He slowed then headed for the pits but never returned.

Up front Childs was now on point with Jurad and Myers behind him. Soon after that Strait moved into the top three as he and Myers chased Childs.

Myers used an outside pass to take the lead while Strait did the same thing to claim second. Behind them Alec and Don Childs were running close together.

Alec Childs began to challenge Strait for second while Myers motored off on cruise control as he had command of the race. At the checkered it was Myers the winner but Childs took second ahead of Strait.

Lovelock Speedway: IMCA battle for second.

Don Childs (40r) gets the inside line and will take second place from Andy Strait.

Later Strait explained he made two mistakes during the race but was also driving to save his tires since it was such a long race.

At the end of Saturday Myers had split victories with his win Saturday while Cory Sample was Friday’s winner.

The 360 Sprint Cars ran a 25-lap main and it took a pair of attempts before they were off and running. Up front Orry Stevens was on point with Dan Stevens giving chase.

Early on the car of Darby Sides was smoking and it only got worse as the race progressed. Then Wade Lumsden’s car had a small fire so he quickly stopped in Turn 3.

Lovelock Speedway: Wade Lumsden's sprint car had a small fire.

Wade Lumsden brought the 360 Sprint Car main to a halt when his car had a small fire.

The officials threw the red flag stopping the race as they rushed to see about Lumsden’s car. The small fire was put out quickly then his car and that of Sides were either towed or pushed to the pics.

Once the race resumed Stevens was off and running with Robert Cooney taking over second. They finished in that order with Dan Stevens and Bob Cooney taking third and fourth.

Lovelock Speedway: Orry Stevens sweeps the spring car races.

Orry Stevens take the checkered flag Saturday night and makes it a sweep of the Frontier Day Races.

After his victory lap Stevens said, “Kind of a rough track tonight, real slick in 1 and 2. As you saw earlier we had a little 360 moment but Kevin and I went ack to the pits and he set up my car right. Big thanks to Kevin and Shane turner, my girlfriend Marni as well as sponsors TnT, C&C and everybody that helps me”

Stevens is one of the three drivers that swept the Frontier Day races with victories on Friday and Saturday night.

Just before the Dwarf Car main began Tim Fitzpatrick had to pit due to a flat tire. He did return and joined the fray.

On the track Calvin Ryle was first on point but a caution on the second lap slowed the pace. This was right after Joe Frock had moved into second place.

Once the green waved again Frock used an inside move to grab the lead and motor away. Behind him Steve Winters was closing in on Ryle, who was in second place.

Lovelock Speedway: Joe Frock (16d) and Calvin Ryle.

During the Dwarf Car main Joe Frock gets the inside line and will make the winning pass on early leader Calvin Ryle (81).

Two cars would spin in Turn 2 causing a caution and bunching the cars. But once again, on the green, Frock motored away with Ryle holding second while Fitzpatrick was in third ahead of Steve Winters.

They finished in that order.

Lovelock Speedway: Joe Frock, Dwarf Car winner.

Joe Frock takes his second victory lap after winning two Dwarf Car main events in as many days.

After taking a victory lap Frock said, “It was a little more challenging this time, didn’t get quite a good start. Kind of got shoved out to the outside, just made my way and waited for him (Ryle) to make a mistake and seized the opportunity and took it when I could.”

Then he thanked sponsors Wild Island, Damron Racing Las Vegas, Nature’s Bakery, DRI, Ignition Motorsports Design, Voss Fab and Axel Sports.

For Frock, who is heading to a national race in Medford this coming weekend, it was a sweep of both days.

The Hobby Stock main got off to a slow start after Jimmy Berhorst got hung up on the inside berm. Once that was resolved then he had a problem in Turn 3.

Finally on the third try the race got rolling. Up front Chris Christiano was on point and leading Tim Russell.

They would be soon joined by Galen Reese, who was racing the only Super Stock 4 in the event. Reese would be credited with third place although he did fall back and pitted.

Lovelock Speedway: Tim Russell chased by Galen Reese.

During the Hobby Stock main, second place Tim Russell is chased by Galen Reese, who drove a Super Stock 4.

Up front Christiano wasn’t to be denied as he won for the second time in two days sweeping the racing weekend. Coming home second was Russell.

“I’m pretty excited about it as we got a clean sweep last night,” Christiano said. “We spend a lot of time on this car, a lot of money and we come out here to put on a good show.

Then he thanked sponsors Cobb Productions, Irwin Auto and Diesel Repair, Christiano Racing and my family.

There were two SS4’s on hand and there would have been a short race for them but Galen Reese had a mechanical problem at the Hobby Stock main. So the track let Danielle Paine get some laps in after the racing was completed.

OTHER RACING NEWS:

  • The top two NASCAR divisions raced in separate locations this weekend.

The Sprint Cup race took a bit longer than anticipated due to fog as it had to be postponed until Monday. Then with 22 laps to go the fog shut the race down and approaching rain caused NASCAR to call the race.

Kyle Busch started 16th and finished ninth while older brother Kurt ended up 10th after starting 15th.

In Saturday’s Xfinity race in Iowa there were two Nevada natives in the field. Brendan Gaughan started eighth and finished 11th while T.J. Bell started 33rd but fell to 38th at the end.

This week the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals are being held at her ranch in Tennessee. At least three young riders from our area are competing and I’m attaching the schedule where the races can be streamed.

Remember these are probably east coast broadcast times so subtract three hours from what is being shown.
