Even the moon wasn’t full it was a very different night of racing but the drivers rose to the occasion.
FERNLEY (July 16) – 95A Speedway had an odd night this weekend. While the car count was low those drivers in attendance put on a pretty good show, even if most of the races were runaways.
“With the car count being so low it was disappointing that we didn’t have any more cars than we had tonight. We wish there had been more but that’s the way it is,” Cory Sample said after winning the IMCA main.
Then he gave special thanks to his father for all the hard work that’s gone into the car.
There were five IMCA Modifieds on hand but when the main began only four answered the green flag as Tyler Patzke was unable to make the start.
Cory Sample, who won the heat race, made use of his pole position and jumped into the lead. From there he was on cruise until taking the checkered flag at the end.
Behind him Larry McCracken, who started on the outside pole, tried to make a race of it but could never close on the leader and had to settle for the runner up spot ahead of Wade Deburg and Paris Archie.
During the awards ceremony Sample added that’s he’s ranked second nationally and leads in our region for IMCA points.
The race of the night was in the Pro Stock class. Once again the car count was low as many drivers were saving their equipment until next week when the Nevada Pro Stock Association stages its next round.
It took two attempts to get the race started and after the green Matt Ramthun and James Gonzalez were close.
Eventually Gonzalez tried too hard and spun his car, which gave Darrick Rauscher the break he needed to use an inside move and take the lead.
Antonio Aragon did make it to second but then slowed and stopped due to an unknown mechanical problem.
On the restart Ramthun used his outside position to get on point but Rausche was close behind. Lap after lap they dueled for the lead but in the end Ramthun scored the victory followed by Rauscher and Gonzalez.
Ramthun has been put in the seat of B.J. Pearson’s Nuclear Banana car and will race for the remainder of the year.
“The race was very sloppy, I was sloppy, the car was sloopy and I don’t like blocking like that but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do sometimes,” Ramthun said after the race. “I like racing with all these guys but it’s been a long time since I’ve been in the car. We’ll see how we do in Fallon.”
Then he thanked B.J. Pearson for letting him race the car and all the other Pro Stock drivers for letting him race with them.
Initially there were four Street Stocks on hand but Danny Strickland was unable to make the start. Actually the race almost had only two starters.
Earlier in the evening Rick Miller, who won the heat race was injured during a rollover wreck during the chain races. Unable to drive his car Miller put his old friend J.T. Stark behind the wheel. Points are awarded to the cars so in a case like this a substitute driver will earn points for Miller’s car.
When the green waved Michael Burns jumped into the lead while Owen George and Stark gave chase. Eventually Start took second and closed the gap with Burns.
Contact between the two sent both of them to the back and caused a very unusual outlaw start. Several weeks ago the track stopped using these starts, where the leader is upfront alone and everyone else lines up side-by-side behind him.
This time Stark and Burns were side by side but when the green waved Stark used an outside move to take the lead. Behind him George, whose car was smoking, was busy keeping Burns at bay.
In the end Stark won the race followed by George and Burns.
After the race Stark said, “It was fun, I was subbing for Rick. He took a little spin in the chain races and luckily he didn’t get hurt, that’s all that matters. I just wanted to bring it home so we could keep it in the points and there’s a lot of motor in that car, a lot than in mine.”
Then he thanked the Lord that Rick Miller was safe.
The Dwarf Cars had the biggest field of the night. Roy Petersen usually has great starts and once again, on the green, he jumped out in first but then was quickly passed by Billie Canham.
Behind the leader Joe Frock was carefully moving forward and was soon in third. Ahead of him Tim Fitzpatrick took the point with Canham slipping to second.
Less than a lap later Frock used an inside move to take the lead and Fitzpatrick slipped up the track in Turn 4.
From then on Frock was in cruise as he built his lead to almost half a lap at the finish. Calvin Ryle tried to make a race of it but he got to second too late and had to settle for that spot.
Glen Sciarani wound up third after chasing Ryle for several laps while Canham, Fitzpatrick and Petersen were in the final three spots at the finish.
“Actually it took some time picking through traffic and picking guys off,” Frock said. “Wanted to be cautious, avoid any tangles, it’s our last race before we head up to Medford for the Western States Nationals. It was a good kind of test and tune for us.”
Then he thanked a group of people that have supported him as well as sponsors Todd Damron Racing Las Vegas, Wild Island, DRI, Nature’s Bakery, Ignition Motorsports Design, Voss Fab and Axcel Sports.
When the Super Stock 4 main began there was a side-by-side battle for the point between Jesse James and Dennis Crook. Eventually Crook took and held the lead.
Behind the leader James found himself in third and chasing Justin Busch, who got the lead after problems forced Crook into the pits and out of the race.
Three laps from the end another car dropped out. Up front howver James was making a race of it as he challenged Busch. Eventually they slightly spread out and Busch went into cruise mode.
In the end it was Busch, James, who was closing during the final laps and Rich Innis.
“The race was good, we had a good time and it was fun,” Busch said later. “Don’t know if I could have held (James) off for a couple of more laps. He was ready to either pass me or spin me out, one of the two.”
Then James said with a laugh, “I would have spun him out.”
Then Busch thanked Kimble Equipment, his wife and family, Stewy, his mom, dad and APD.
Now the track will be dark the week of July 30 so they won’t conflict with Frontier Days in Lovelock.
