IRONMAN CHALLENG RECAP: PART 2

Finally the marathon was ending at the fifth track the tour visited.

The Ironman Challenge, after visiting four different tracks over an eight-day period headed for its final stop; Rattlesnake Raceway outside of Fallon, Nevada. While the IMCA ranks were thinned the Hobby Stock division stayed pretty stout.

For Cory Sample, the IMCA points leader both races might accomplish a milestone he wanted. Leaving 95A Speedway he has 98 victories under his belt and wanted the illusive 100th.

In Sunday’s main event it appeared that Robert Miller might play the role of spoiler after leading much of the race. However Sample used the cautions and restarts to his advantage and pulled off the victory.

Miller was second, followed by James Thibodeaux, who used a consistent, strong drive to take third ahead of Elko driver Andy Strait.

Early in the event there was a big pile up of cars in the Turn 2 area that eliminated several from the two-day show. One of them was Wade Taylor, whose car was too badly damaged to continue so his hopes for a shot at the championship were ended.

When the Hobby Stock main began 21 drivers took the green but for two of them, the championship was still he tour up for grabs.

Shayna Robertson dedicated her run in the tour to her daughter that’s going through training with the Army. And for the final two nights she used the daughter’s last name, Hartman, as her own.

In the final laps young Cody Morris pulled off the victory when he got past leader Mickey Beuchat. Behind them Bob Vaden ended up fourth while (Robertson) Hartman was 10th.

Supporting the show were a group of Super Stock 4 racers and Dennis Crook ran away with the race after getting past his father Stephen Crook Sr., who came in second.

The 4th of July race is a traditional one as the track is also the site of the town’s fireworks display.

Due to attrition, only 10 IMCA Modified were able to make Monday’s main event.

When the green waved 18-year-old Vince Evenson, who is leaving for college in a few weeks, led the charge and held off two-time IMCA national champion Zane DeVilbiss for a couple of laps.

Eventually Cory Sample was able to make his way to second and the chase was on. Lap after lap they were nose-to-tail until Sample used an outside charge after a restart to claim the point when he got around Vilbiss.

Now it was Sample’s turn to be chased but contact between the two spun DeVilbiss and dropped him from contention. Still Sample wasn’t out of the woods and next he had to hold off a determined Jeff Olschowka.

After a nose-to-tail run they were almost side-by-side when the white flag flew. In the end Sample scored his 100th IMCA victory by less than a car length over Olschowka while Malen Gozalez was third ahead of Joel Myers and DeVilbiss.

Unlike Sunday night only 16 Hobby Stocks took the green and up front David Ausano zoomed away in the lead. Behind him Shayna Hartman was tailing Bob Vaden as they raced around the track.

During the last part of the race young Cody Morris was right behind the leader but had to settle for second as Ausano wasn’t about to be denied the victory.

Vaden’s third place finish iced his Hobby Stock northern division championship as well as the overall title. Robertson (Hartman) celebrated with him as she was the southern division champ.

Two other classes, Dwarf Cars and Super Stock 4’s supported the show. Joe Frock again demonstrated that he’s the master of the little Dwarf cars by scoring a runaway victory while Dennis Crook did the same thing in the Super Stock 4 class.
