95A SPEEDWAY: Miller and Kay score big wins.

This weekend was a special one for two drivers and one family that honored one they recently lost.

FERNLEY (June 4) – 95A Speedway had an interesting race this weekend. One driver achieved a mile stone, another won the big prize and both drivers as well as fans paid homage to the recently deceased father of a racing family.

Early in the evening the track honored Steve Rauscher, who recently passed away. His sons, Darrick and Dave race as well as some of the grandchildren, who compete in Outlaw Karts.

Dave Rauscher rides on his brother Derrick’s car while their Outlaw Kart racing children follow. This was part of a tribute to their father Steve, who recently passed away.

Many of the drivers showed up and followed Darrick and their Outlaw Kart drivers in two honor laps around the track.

Once that was over it was time to go racing and for one driver the night was very special.

The night was also special for an IMCA driver as he was going for a milestone in his career.

“Last week at Fallon my brother came up and said the car wasn’t sitting right as the front end was too high. We took it back to Travis White’s house, where the car stays now, and we found the front end being a inch and a half high across the front. We reset the whole front end and it’s back feeling like it was last year so I’ve got to thank my brother Randy for bringing it to my attention as I just let it get by me.”

Then he thanked his sponsors R&J Landscaping, Premier Auto Body, Buehn Motorsports, Silver State Freight Brokerage and his own company, Miller’s Entertainment.

When the green waved to start the 30-lap IMCA main Miller was in the spot, on the pole. He took off with and soon gapped the field.

Behind him Paris Archie and Walter Ball were engaged in a duel for third while Jeff Olschowka held down second.

It only took a few laps before Miller was reeling in the slowest cars and would soon lap them. He was on cruise control and having an easy race of it.

Fernley 95A Speedway: Robert Miller wins #100.

The special part of the race was that it was Miller’s 100th victory in an IMCA Modified. A goal not many achieve.

After the race he said, “Didn’t think we were going to get it but we did and I want to thank everybody involved in making it happen. It’s sunk in and I’m glad it’s over.

This week the Pro Stock field was a bit thin. In fact they lost three cars during the heat races.

So when the green waved on the 10-car field pole sitter Gene Kay took of with Robert Miller giving chase.

Soon both leaders were extending their lead while James Gonzalez and Darrick Rauscher held down third and fourth place.

The first caution came on lap six when a car blew its motor and appeared to catch on fire. Official stopped the race as the safety crew quickly took care of the problem.

After the track was cleared there were several laps run under caution so the field could work in the oil that was put down on the track.

At this time another car also dropped out so now there were eight cars left.

Fernley 95A Speedway: Darrick Rauscher, 2nd place.

Darrick Rauscher was second in the most recent Nevada Pro Stock Association race.

On the restart Kay took off and a few laps later the car of Ed Goss began to smoke and he headed for the pits. One more caution slowed things when Mike Prien spun in Turn 2 and right after that he spun again.

On the green Kay took off again but this time Darrick Rauscher was second ahead of Gonzalez. They would finish in that order quite a distance behind Kay.

Fernley 95A Speedway: Gene Kay wins in Pro Stock.

Gene Kay wins the Nevada Pro Stock main event.

As for Kay, luck was with him as his car threw a fan belt after he had won the race.

After the racing ended and before Kay was handed the winner’s prize, a $1,000 he had a chance to talk about the night. While he was unbeatable in the race it didn’t start out that way.

“We did a lot of homework this week, changed a lot of things for the heat race and it didn’t work. So we went back, threw that set up away and went back to using the set up we were using the week before. It worked very well and this track was awesome tonight, super smooth, lots of grip it was great.”

Then he thanked sponsors Eternal Image and Sierra Nevada Properties.

When the Street Stock main began Chris Christiano quickly moved into the lead. Not far behind him was Dwight Bolton and soon he used an inside move to take the point.

However Bolton was being challenged by Randy Boyd, who was unable to make the pass. Behind them Christiano was holding off jake Baker.

The first caution came when Christiano spun in Turn 4. On the restart Bolton took off with Boyd right behind him. Further back Baker was being challenged by Rick Miller for third..

Just as the leaders were catching a slower card there was another caution when Boyd looped his car in Turn 2. Once again Bolton took off but this time Baker was right behind him.

In the final laps Boyd was moving up and finished fourth behind Miller. Up front Baker could not catch Bolton, who went on to win the race.

“The race was a lot of fun,” Bolton said. “We started in the back, I caught some good breaks in the traffic was just able to take advantage of it. The car was real tight in the middle of the corners but old Randy Boyd kept hitting me in the middle of the corners and it turned my car sideways and I could take off again. I’ve got to thank Randy Boyd for all the help getting through the corners.”

Then Bolton thanked his wife, pit crew and sponsors Silver Springs Napa, Martin Auto Color in Carson City, Silver City Auto Body and Glass and Carson Valley Signs out of Gardnerville.

Even before the Super Stock 4 main began there was a retirement when the car of Dennis Crook stopped running. As a result he spent the race sitting on the infield.

When the race began it didn’t take too long before Justin Busch was in command.

Once caution slowed the race when Danielle Paine either spun or was helped around. Still she rallied back for a third place finish behind runner up Rich Innis.

Fernley 95A Speedway: Justin Busch, SS4 winner.

After winning the Super Stock 4 main, Justin Busch is about to take a victory lap.

Up front however there was no catching Bush as he stormed away to claim the victory.

It was a heck of a night,” he said. “No one knew what we had when we came out. I think the car agreed with the track, so it was a good night.”

Then he thanked his family as well as sponsors Kimble Equipment and Advancd Pipe and Design.

Now the track is dark for two weeks before racing resumes.
