LOVELOCK SPEEDWAY OPENS SEASON

Finally the weather smiled and the racing season began.

LOVELOCK (May 20) – Lovelock Speedway finally got its year started after having its first race rained out two weeks ago. Although the weather was cool, winds were calm and set the stage for a good night of racing.

“Glad we could come down and run a nice race. It’s all about coming down and having some fun. The track is good, it’s got a couple of rough spots in the corners but nothing that we couldn’t get around. When I could see half the field on the other half side of the track it was like, ‘we’re skating now.'” KC Kubichek said winning the IMCA main.

Then he thanked all those that help him, including his girlfriend Wendy and his company Desert Disposal.

The IMCA Modified field is set and ready for its main event.

The IMSA field was the largest of the night and when the green waved the start was aborted as Jake Aker spun going into Turn 2. Once everyone got reassembled the race was on and KC Kubichek swept past Cory Sample to take the lead.

Right after the IMCA main began KC Kubichek (333) sweeps past Cory Sample and grabs the lead.

As Sample fell back Mike White took second while Sample was third ahead of local J.D. Jurad. Lap after lap the lead four tore around the track.

On lap 15, of the 25-lap event, Aker and Trevor Gurley briefly got locked together, causing a caution. Once they were separated Aker headed for the pits. Then Steve Evenson slowed in Turn 3 and got going again while White’s car was checked for a possible loose rear bumper. Once things were in order racing resumed.

On the restart White dove inside and took the lead while Jurad briefly held second. Once Kubichek got going again he soon was second and ran down White.

Asked about that Kubichek said, “When we had that restart I chunked in a hole over there and got real tight and then we come around her and chunked again and Juard and White were getting by me but we just hammered it down and passed them back.”

By now Don Childs was third with Jurad fourth.

Lovelock Speedway: Steve Evenson with motor problems.

Right at the end of the IMCA feature, the motor of Steve Evenson had problems but he was able to finish the race and take the checkered.

In the final laps White and Childs dueled for second but they finished in that order with Jurad coming home fourth.

Only a few Hobby Stocks showed up but Galen Reese has his Super Stock 4 in the field. Although he wasn’t running for points or money, Reese soon was in command.

The Hobby Stock field is ready to go for their main event.

Behind him Michael Bartlett was making a race of it. However he was unable to close the gap on Reese.

In the final laps Bartlett’s car was getting loose coming out of the corners but he still was chasing Reese, who took the checkered flag first.

Galen Reese in his Super Stock 4 takes the checkered flag.

While Reese finished first, Bartlett was the actual winner of the race.

After taking a victory lap he said, “That was an awesome ride. Pro 1 Automotive, they’re the ones that helped put the car together, get it on the track, did all the engine tuning, they are great down there.”

Lovelock Speedway: Michael Bartlett wins in Hobby Stocks.

Michael Bartlett hoists the checked flag during his victory lap. He actually won the Hobby Stock feature race.

During the post race interview Bartlett was asked by the track announcer “Davey Boy,” Munez, how he let a 4-cylinder beat his V-8 powered car.

The Bartlett said, “Those cars are set up like the big Modifieds with different adjustments so they can get that power down a lot better than we can as we’re like stock. I’m running really low pressure to get a good bite and tire roll over. Thought it was going to be going dry-slick but it ended up staying pretty tacky so it made me pretty loose.”

Unfortunately only two sprint cars showed up so they only did hot laps. Hopefully, two weeks from now when next event is run there will be enough to race.
