This weekend Mother Nature went crazy but the track overcame the challenge and had a great afternoon of racing.
FERNLEY (April 9) – 95A Speedway’s second race of the season was quite a mix. First it was dry slick, despite the best efforts of the track crew, then after an one hour hold for rain, the track came in for the IMCA feature.
After winning that feature, once it got restarted, Mike White said, “Second in a row for IMCA. The rain was what I needed.”
Have to thank Megan, my family and everybody that helps me out on this race car.
The first part of the main was start and stop. One lap after the green it began to rain hard so officials stopped the 30-lap affair and sent everyone to their pits.
After waiting for at least 45 minutes after the rain stopped the cars were called back out to repack the track. Once that was done they lined up with Joel Myers on point.
On the green Myer took off with Cory Sample and White in hot pursuit. About four laps later Travis White spun and brought out a short caution.
On the green Myers took off but had to fend off a challenge by Sample. Then another caution came after Alec Childs spun had to head for the pits with a flat.
Right after the restart both Myers and Sample tangled putting Jeff Olschowka into the lead with White and Will Fryckman giving chase. A lap later Olschowka’s car began to smoke and he headed for the pits.
Now Fryckman briefly head the point until White got past him.
“When the leaders got together I saw my opportunity and came in behind the X (Fryckman) car. Then I waited for my opportunity to get by him,” White said.
After that White took off with Travis White, Myers and Sample giving chase. Myers would slip back to third after he went wide in Turn 4.
By then Myers had turned a 18.2 second lap as the track was really hooking up for the cars.
Finally Sample took second and the chase was on however he just didn’t have enough time. But during the chase Sample turned a 17.8 second lap.
In the end it was White’s race and he reached the checkered flag first followed by a closing Sample, Travis White and Myers, who ended up fourth.
When the dozen Street Stocks took to the track it hadn’t begun to rain so the track was dry slick.
On the green Jimmy Berhorst was on point with Jeff Tuttle right behind him. Unfortunately Tuttle would then spin out of second.
Back in the pack last event winner Jake Baker spun and fortunately he went up the banking in Turn 3 so everyone was able to miss him.
Two quick cautions followed and during one of them Baker had to make a quick visit to the pits to get a flat tire changed. When racing resumed he charged through the field and headed toward the front.
At this time Randy Boyd was on point with Chris Christiano giving chase. Then there was another caution when Derreck Ramthun’s car slowed and stalled before he could make it to the pits.
While dust could have been a problem on the dry track it didn’t seem to bother any of the drivers.
By now Dwight Bolton was behind leader Boyd and ready to pounce. And when the green waved he did just that and swept into the lead with Boyd and Baker giving chase.
A bit later there were other spins by J.T. Stark, Berhorst and Tuttle and Shayna Hartman stopped in Turn 2. This was followed by a caution for debris in Turn 1.
Then Tori Edgington’s hood opened and she headed for the pits. When she came back both the hood and left quarter panel on her car were gone.
On the restart Bolton again took off with Baker and Rick Miller, who later took second, giving chase. Behind the leaders Edgington slowed while Berhorst spun, possible due to having a flat tire.
Up front Bolton streaked to his first victory of the year followed by Miller, Christiano and Baker, who slipped back to fourth.
During the awards ceremony Bolton said, “It was a good, fun race, the track was very challenging and I started in the back. It was a good way to start the year.”
Then he thanked family members that came up from Southern California to support him, his wife Valerie, pit crew and sponsors Auto Color, Silver City Auto Body, Carson Valley Signs as well as Napa Auto Parts that have been supporters since he began racing.
Dennis Crook dominated the Super Stock 4 main however it wasn’t a cakewalk as the track was pretty tricky to drive.
It would take two attempts to get the SSR main started and once the green waved Stephen Crook Sr. lead the charge. Behind him his son Dennis was on a charge and heading to the front.
Soon after the start Dennis Crook was second with Jesse James close behind him. Then there was a caution when Justin McIlvain spun out.
On the restart James briefly held the point until Crook used an inside move to take over the lead. Another caution then came out after the left front suspension on McIlvain’s car broke and he would like to the pits.
Rookie Madison Hood was the only Pure Stock at the track so she was put at the back of the field. Although she’s outgunned by the SSR’s she put on a creditable performance until her motor went sour and she had to retire.
After McIlvain’s car got off the track the green waved again and Crook took off and was never headed although James did his best to catch him.
Later Crook said, “The track was super tricky I probably almost spun out four times. That track was trickiest I’ve raced on in a long time and it was all about finess tonight, kind of driving with an egg under my foot to keep the car underneath me and that is what I did. Jesse put up a good fight and I just got a good start on a restart and happen to get up next to him enough to pull the lead out so it was pretty awesome.”
Then he thanked sponsor 10,000 RPM as well as Bob, Kim, Steve my dad, his mother and whole family for their support.
During the intermission there were chain races.
The next race at 95A Speedway will be on April 23rd and will be the first evening race with a 6 p.m. start time. The night will be an action packed on as, in addition to the cars, the BCRA Midgets will be back as well as the Nevada Pro Stock Association for their second round of that series.
