Finally the long awaited spring motocross season has started.
Livfast Exit 28 began the MX775 Spring Classic motocross season. Strong winds and cool temperatures couldn’t keep a large group of racers away as they were ready to rip.
Several teams were also present including RMS, Moto Source, Design Tech 1 and Testa Motorsports that brought between 30 to 40 riders.
The second 250/450 Pro and Intermediate moto had a rider from each division going for the victory. They flew around the track, got some big air going by the flagman and turned the moto into their own private duel.
After taking the checkered winner Tony Giusti, an intermediate rider, said, “I could see him (Justin Minsch) because he dove under me a couple of time but it’s hard to really horsepower on these lines to I was able to hold my line.”
Then he thanked his father, Moto Source and everyone else that helps him.
Asked if he could have passed Giusti, runner up Minsch said, “A few more laps maybe but he was riding pretty good so it would have been tough. And I need to thank my parents.”
Race number 9 combined several divisions but at the gate drop Robert Kelsey and David Martin took off and left everyone behind.
Many times the two 30+ Junior riders were so close a large blanket could have covered both of them. And, despite the wind, they got some big air as they went flying past the flagman.
Lap after lap they tore around the course but in the end Kelsey swept the day by winning both motos while Martin ran a very close second.
Asked if he knew how close Martin was Kelsey said, “Yea, the whole entire race I could hear him and I looked back a couple of time. He kept me honest.”
Then he thanked everybody and his wife for their support.
While several races were close one young rider, Dylan Thorwaldson owned the day as he swept the 85cc Junior class and the Supermini motos.
The only time anyone was close to him was at the start. After that everyone would be left in his dust.
After his final moto Thorwaldson was asked about whether it is easier to be that far ahead or to be racing someone else. After taking a second to think about it, he said, “It’s about the same. When someone’s close you can push yourself a little harder but it just depends on what you like.”
Then he thanked his parents, Moto Source and all his friends.
Another close set of motos came in the 125/250 Intermediate class.
The first moto was highlighted by a battle between Tony Giusti, who won, and Chad Heishman, who eventually slipped back to third when Mason Olson took the spot.
In their second moto it was all Heishman and Giusti as they ran virtually nose-to-tail for the entire moto. In the end
Heishman took the win but wound up second overall as Giusti scored the day’s overall victory.
After winning Heishman said, “He (Giusti) was there the whole time and I was feeling him. The wind’s making it a little tricky, you can feel it as it definitely glows you to one side so you’ve got to be careful. But we’re still having fun.”
Then he thanked his father, The O’Brien Group, Works Connection, Corsair Moto and everyone that has been helping him.
Only two women were competing and Ashleigh Trapanese took the division victory with Ashtyn Shepard finishing second for the day.
In the junior or Pee Wee set, Tanner Ines and Tanner Stambaugh ran one-two in the 7 & Over class. In the other two Pee Wee divisions Hadleigh Kahabka and Graeson Kahabka were the winners.
While the day was filled with hard racing and some crashes most were minor and riders emerged relatively unhurt. However two riders were hurt bad to be transported and another probably was taken in to check his injures.
When this was published their conditions were unknown.
Over the past few years the motocross community has shrunk but now seems on the rebound. In fact several classes had from 14 to 17 riders starting various motos; a good sign for the sport as we head into the year.
During the event there was a fund raiser for fallen rider Sam Glaster, who was hurt at a race in Winnemucca. He needs funds for a trip to Denver for rehabilitation.
Stickers with his number were being sold at the event.
Now everyone gets a break over the Easter weekend then the action resumes at the Fernley Lion’s Motocross Track, or the Sand Box it’s called, on the weekend of April 2nd.
