Championship Night was delayed due to rain so the track moved the main events to a night where it didn’t rain.
FERNLEY (Oct. 9) – After having the season’s final mains were rained out Fernley 95A Speedway held a make up race Friday night just before its annual two-day show.
After capping his championship year with a victory, Robert Miller said, “It was good and all I can say is that the race is 30-laps and it’s not over until the end and there’s 30-laps and not 10. I want to thank, first and foremost my brother Randy, R&J Landscaping, my cousin Chuck Miller, who we dedicate this whole year to for his recovery from cancer. Then Sandy Petersen over at Premier Auto Body, Al at Friesen Chevrolet, NJ Construction. Whal Traction Shocks and most importantly the fans that came out and crew, Steve Ryan and Wyatt.”
After the traditional 4-wide salute to the fans the IMCA field formed up and got ready to take the green flag.
First on point was class and track champion Robert Miller but Jeff Olschowka had different ideas and used an inside charge to take the lead while exiting Turn 2. Then the lead duo began to distance themselves from the pack.
Back in the pack Travis White held third while Mark Skender held down fourth.
Soon the leaders were reeling in the back markers but when he was passing Keith Walsh there was contact and Olschowka spun out of the lead. Now Miller was in the lead with White and Skender moving up to second and third.
Soon however Walter Ball took over third. Then Olschowka’s night went from bad to worse when he spun and then stalled on the front straight.
There was also a caution when Ball spun in Turn 2. On the restart Miller took off while Skender spun and somehow Rocky Goetz missed him.
Once the field reformed Miller was on point followed by White and Goetz. Skender would spin again bringing out another caution but up front Miler was in command.
There was one more caution due to a tangle in Turn 2. Once the green waved again Miller took off on his way to victory followed by White, Goetz and Mike White.
The Pro Stock main was all Mike Learn. After a short side-by-side charge down the front straight between Rob Grace and Learn it was all over.
Once up front Learn showed everyone his heels and checked out. He won with James Gozalez finishing second ahead of Grace and points leader Gary Nevers.
Once the points are settled, including throw away races, the title will come down to either Grace, the defending champ or Nevers.
When the Street Stock main began Dwight Bolton and David Ausano had a brief side-by-side duel. After that Bolton checked out while Ausano was busy holding off Rick Miller.
Soon there was a three-way duel for second and in the end Gilly Gilmore claimed the spot followed by Ausano and Shayna Hartman. As for Miller it wasn’t his best night, as he would fall to fifth at the finish.
For Bolton the race put an exclamation to the end of his championship season and he celebrated by waving the checkered flag while standing on top of his car.
After the race ended Bolton said, “I was trying to lap everybody but couldn’t find a clean line to get around. It want good, the car is running good.”
Then he thanked Fernley 95A Speedway, all the staff and volunteers, Silver Springs Napa Auto and Truck Parts, Silver City Auto Body and Glass, T&H Auto Paints from Carson City and my whole crew at 5150 racing and finally his wife, Valerie Bolton for letting him race.
First on point when the Dwarf Car main began was Dan Geil but behind him class champion Joe Frock was on a charge. The first caution came after Dan Pieretti spun in Turn three.
Once the green waved again Geil took off with Shane Ramthun, Bobby Wilson and Frock giving chase. Not long after that Frock swept past everyone to claim the lead.
There was one race-stopping incident when a rod let go in Wilson’s motor starting an oil fire as he exited the track. As the officials stopped everone the safety crew chased Wilson into the pits and made quick work of the fire.
When racing resumed Frock took off and left everyone in his dust as he headed off to take the victory in his championship year. Roy Peterson, in his best run of the season came home second followed by Glen Sciarani, Dan Pieretti and Geil, who had to drop out at the halfway point.
After ending this championship year with a victory Frock said, “We wrapped up the championship I think two races ago so we’re just out there to test the car and see what it could do. Started last and went to the front, kept the car smooth and just finished out what was a great season.”
Then he thanked HRT Racing, Wild Island, DRI, Nature’s Bakery, Exel Sports, and Ignition Motorsports for their signs.
In the Dwarf Car class, 95A Speedway has become the House of Frock.
In a few weeks Frock will step into something different, the IMCA car Robert Miller usually drives. He’s be in that seat for the annual “Duel in the Desert, ” held at Las Vegas.
Asked about this Frock said, “I’m real excited about that, it’s a great car and a great team so no excuses.”
First on point in Super Stock 4 was Justin Busch but things slowed when Dennis Crook and Danielle Paine both spun. They were able to continue and after the field got in order the green waved again.
It only took a short time before class champion Crook used an inside move to grab the lead while Bush and Bob Davis disputed second place.
The race was halted so track officials could check on Kenny Martin after he hit the front straight wall: He was all right but the car wasn’t. Then when things got going again Steve Crook Sr. spun and was missed by Davis.
Crook Sr. had a flat and would drop out of the race. Up front Dennis Crook was in command or so it seemed until Busch caught him.
After a short nose-to-tail duel Busch slipped up the track in Turn 4 giving Crook the gap he needed to claim the victory. Busch ended up second head of Paine and Davis.
Josay Hartman and David Raber started the Pure Stock main with a short side by duel until Raber claimed the point.
The first caution came when Jim Paulk spun his Mustang exiting Turn 2. On the restart Hartman used an inside move to take the lead while Raber was giving chase.
Raber spun out of contention when he got a flat then had to pit Then class champion Rich Innis left the race at the halfway point with a flat.
After the final caution there were only two drivers left standing and Hartman sailed off to the victory with Jim Paulk taking the runner up spot.
Those races ended the points season and the drivers would spend the next day getting ready for the annual two-day show and brings the curtain down on the year’s racing at the track.
