VORRA AT WILD WEST

VORRA spent the weekend at Wild West and Sunday was an action packed day of racing.

Mustang (Sept. 4) – The Valley Off Road Racing Association staged its final Nevada race this season on Sunday. Once again it was at the Wild West Motorsports Park and attracted local drivers as well as from California and Oregon.

The show was slightly delayed as the track needed some TLC due to rain the previous night.

“I won, it was awesome, best race I’ve had in a long time,” Tim Compton said after winning the UTV 3rd moto. “Swapped the lead once and it was either he was going to win or I was going to win it. I screwed up in the corner going up the hill and he got up on my inside and then I had the angle coming from the outside to take him on the last corner coming down the hill, so it was neck and neck.”

In the race for the UTV lead Tim Compton leads a determined Joel Counts.

That third UTV moto had to be the best race of the day. On the green Beau Judge was on point with Phil Blurton right behind him.

Behind the leaders Tim Compton was on a charge and once he got going so was Joel Counts. A bobble cost Blurton second place as Compton roared past him.

Soon Compton was challenging the leader then he took the point as they headed uphill toward Turn 4. Behind them Counts was in second and closing in.

While Counts would get close a few bobbles would cost him some space but each time he recovered and renewed his chase.

After taking the white flag the lead duo was nose-to-tail then side-by-side as they headed to the top of Turn 4. Going up the hill Counts finally took the lead but not by much.

Then Compton got the better angle and managed to get ahead during the charge downhill to the checkered flag.

After the dust settled runner-up Joel Counts said, “It was fun but I think he got me coming down the hill. I had fun, love this track here in Nevada and it’s my favorite track.”

Beau Judge won the second UTV moto but Counts was close behind him at the finish.

The other close race was the final Class 10 moto. On the green David Kordonowy took the point with Max Bagget and with Dave Broome not far behind.

Soon it became a two-driver race as Kordonowy and Bagget gapped the rest of the field. A few laps later Broome’s motor let go as he was exiting Turn 3 so he was out of the race.

It was a race long duel in the third Class 10 moto as David Kordonowy was under pressure from Max Baggett.

Up front Baggett was keeping the pressure on Kordonowy as they tore around the track and over the hills. In the end Kordonowy was able to hang on and score a narrow victory over Baggett.

“I didn’t know how close he ( Baggett) was but I felt him one time when he bumped the car. At the last lap I saw him at the top of the corner, he was trying to come around, and at that point I knew it was time to get going. So with one lap left we were able to hang on, it was a good race, was fun and it was a blast.”

Kordonowy also won the second moto but that time the Ultra 4 of Broome was second followed by Tyler Mort.

The first Class 10 moto came to a sudden halt right at the end after Robert Parsons crossed the finish line.

The flagman not only stopped the first Class 10 moto but rushed to the aid of Wes Harbor and his co driver after their crash.

According to a witness Wes Harbor’s buggy crabbed after the step up before the flagman’s stand, then hit some loose mud and began to barrel roll across the track.

Fortunately it came to a halt right side up but both Harbor and his co-driver were shaken up. The medic and officials rushed to the driver’s aid.

Fire and ambulances were summoned and the first unit was from Storey County as their station is the closest to the track while the next one was from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. They assisted getting the co-driver out of the vehicle where they and the arriving medics examined her.

Units from Storey County and the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Agency were on hand to assist getting Wes Harbor and his co-driver out of their wrecked racer.

Her husband took her to the hospital where she was examined and while shaken up was all right.

After making sure it could be done safely, Harbor was lifted out of the racer, put on a gurney, then into an ambulance the took him to the Trauma Center at Renown Medical Center in Reno. After being examined Harbor was released later that afternoon. However his racer was pretty badly damaged but the safety gear worked when it needed to.

Once the incident was cleaned up the officials decided to run the rest of the program.

Three motos for each class were run and the first one was for the Sportsman, Full Metal and Class 9 Buggies. All three motos were run away victories for Jerry Ackles in his Toyota truck.

VORRA - Wild West Motorsports Park - Jerry Ackles is the Sportsman winner.

Even though he was the only Sportsman in the race, Jerry Ackles scored three run away overall victories in his motos

“This is the first outing with this truck on this track, in fact it’s the first time on this track period,” he said later. “We had a lot of fun and it was a great race”

Behind Ackles the race was between the Class 9 buggies. Richard Palasik was first in class in the first moto while Jay Schroeder had that honor in the second.

In the final Class 9 moto Jay Schroeder (914) and Kurt Schnell had a dandy battle for third overall.

In the third moto there was a three-way battle for the lead in Class 9 between Schroeder, Kurt Schnell and Eric Steiger. In the end Steiger was second over all and first in class.

Eric Steiger finished third overall but first in Class 9 at the end of his final moto.

When the green waved on the third Class 1 moto Rob Parsons jumped into the lead with Brad Falin and Eric Miramon holding down second and third.

Rob Parsons was unstoppable in all three Class 1 motos.

Up front there would be no catching Parsons as he left everyone in his dust. Behind him Miramon came home second with Gary Hull in his truck taking third.

“That car is like a Timex watch, I just get in and have fun and it keeps going,” Parsons said later. “In the second race the CV boots on the axels and one of the boots came off during the race and a bunch of dirt and muck got up into the CV there. We thought that might be a problem but we cleaned it out and it made it through the last race. I’m just a big kid having a lot of fun and it was cool.”

Parsons also won the second moto.

When the final Group T moto began Broc Ross charged from the back to the front before the field headed up to the ski jump. From then on it was his race as he left everyone else in his dust.

VORRA - Wild West Motorsports Park - Broc Ross won all three Class T motos.

Broc Ross scored three overall victories in Class T.

Behind him Scott Sibbaid tried his best to make a race out of it but was unable to close on Ross.

“We won Fallon also. This is our first time short coursing this truck with a short course set up on it. We swapped it over from the desert to the short course and we hit the set up pretty close. It worked really well we’ve got a few things to fine tuning it for short course.”

For Ross its been a long haul as the truck had never won a race since it was built nine years ago.

“That was the first finish at Fallon out of nine attempts at a desert race. When I built the truck I wanted to do both desert and short course events,” he said. “So from Fallon we stripped it all down, took all the spares off and put what we though would be a good short course set up on it. And for this track we hit it pretty close as it was handling pretty well.”

Since things were running late the officials decided the trophies to hand out the trophies at the next event.

Now everyone is back home and preparing for VORRA’s final event on October 24-25 at the Prairie City OHV Park. That will bring down the curtain on the 2015 season.
