MRANN headed east for Round 2 of its Fall series and did a rare one-day event.
TOULON (Sept. 27) – Western States Racing Association had a busy weekend here. On Saturday they ran an Enduro event for AMA District 36 the on Sunday the club hosted round 6 of the MRANN racing series, The Wild Horse Hare Scrambles.
“I think I started riding over my head really early in the second loop,” Austin Serpa said after winning the big bike race “I had a lot of close calls and Capparelli got really close to me in the middle of the second loop but I put a gap on him at the end. The track is just brutal, it’s beat, rocky, whooped out, rain rutted, dusty and just anything you can think of.”
Then he thanked sponsors Carson Motor Sports, Tech One Design, X Brand Goggles, Tony from Parts Unlimited and his father Keith.
When the expert line started the race Sean Jones led the charge but Serpa was close behind him as the field left the starting line, whipped through a sharp turn and headed up into the wilds.
Jesse Richardson led the amateur charge while Ryan Pederson got the hole shot when the Novice line was released.
MRANN races separate the experts, amateur and novice riders into separate lines. Then the experts lead the charge followed, after a time pause, by the others one line at a time.
When the first lap ended Serpa had a good lead then lost the handle and went down. It took a bit to get back up and take off so his lead shrunk to less than a minute over then second place Kyle Townsend while Capparelli was less than a minute and a half behind the leader.
Attrition began early as riders started dropping out after only completing one lap. In MRANN to be classed as a finisher a rider must complete one of the two loops around the course, which this time was 45-miles long.
At the checkered Serpa completed his two laps with a time of 3:12:29.003 while the veteran Capparelli ended up with an elapsed time of 3:14:01.174.
When he met Serpa at the finish they exchanged greetings and Capparelli said he had an “oops.”
Then he said, “Well there was a couple or three times I think Austin seen my front tire coming over a couple of ridges. But being so close to the finish I just got out in the middle of nowhere and just tried to pin it to win it. But I had fun, I mean Austin never made a mistake all day and was riding great and the course was awesome, by far the best course this year I think and it fit my riding style.
Then he thanked sponsors Sierra BMW, Beta, O’Niel, FMF and City Boots.
The first amateur to cross the line was Donavyn Morris with a time of 3:53:59.255 good enough for eighth overall.
Once Morris caught his breath he said, “I got a bad start, it was reall rocky, sandy and there were a couple of spots where if I had my other bike I probably would have ate it real good. But it was a good race though.
Then he thanked sponsors Morris Ag Air, CMS and his parents and family for their support.
Leading the veteran charge was fourth place Over 30 Expert Josh Wilson followed by Titan McKibben, who rides in the Over 40 Expert division and finished ninth.
Beth Legenbauer finishing 24th was the highest placed woman and only one that completed both loops. Her time was just over 4 hours, 45 minutes.
Only 26 riders out of the 56 that started completed both laps. Jeff Shepard, who rides in the Over 50 Amateur class was the last rider to do two full circuits as did Over 60 rider Scott McKay, who ended up 23rd overall.
Before the Big Bikes took to their course the Mini Bikes, Women and Bombers ran their combined event. Taking the overall was Ezra “Little Fox,” Belingheri followed by fellow 100cc rider Henry Anderson.
Two women claimed fourth and fifth as novice Kohlette Dubran bested amateur Jolene Harsch. The first 65cc amateur was 15th placed Lawson Williams while the only Bomber racer was 32nd place Gary Moore.
Jesse Miller topped the Pee Wee field while Genevieve Miller came home second. Jesse rides in the Under 6 class while Genevieve rides in the 7 & Over class. These youngsters are the next generation that’s earning its spurs in desert racing.
