Rattlesnake Raceway ended the regular season with its champion’s night.
FALLON (Sept. 12) – The point season ended for the track and division champions were recognized. And fans got to see a varied program that included cars, Outlaw Karts and Mad Metal Mud Drag Racing.
After winning the Hobby Stock main, Dave Ausano was beside himself with joy. After taking a victory lap he jumped on top of his car and waved the checkered flag.
“It’s been a long year and feels great. Man, that was one heck of a race, Royce was almost flawless, made one bobble and here we are. Coming out of Turn 4 all I saw was the championship, we’ve been running for that all year and that’s what we got,” Ausano said in the victory celebration.
While all he had to do was start the race, Ausano was on a mission that was almost derailed by Royce Goetz driving for Dennis Buehn.
When the green waved 01 took off only to spin out of contention on the third lap. This put Cody Morris on point with Goetz second ahead of Jordan Riley.
Then there was a caution caused by a scramble on the backstretch. Larry Conner got the worst of it then got stuck in the pit entrance.
Finally the field restarted the race and Morris took off with Goetz and Tuttle behind him. As the field tore out of Turn 2 there was another tangle with several cars involved.
On of them was the car Tammi Buehn usually drives but on this night Carl Barlow was piloting it and couldn’t avoid the melee. Other involved were Dan Diaz, Ray Miller and Riley.
The officials stopped the race to check on the drivers and to check on Riley, who had hit the wall. Finally, after the mess was cleared the green waved again. This time Goetz used an inside move to take the lead.
Further back Ausano had been picking off the other cars one by one as he moved from the back to the front. Finally he took over second and the chase was on.
The race was stopped again when the car of Paul Shamlin’s slammed into the back stretch wall. It hit hard enough to knock three of the large concrete blocks off the wall, leaving a gap in the second level.
Shamlin wasn’t injured but the same couldn’t be said for his car. And just to make sure he was all right the EMT visited him back in the pits.
Once racing resumed, with six laps to go, Goetz took off with Ausano right behind him. There was one more quick yellow to rearrange the field then the chase was on.
Finally Goetz make just a little bobble in Turn 4, which opened the door for Ausano and he got the lead. And they finished in that order.
When asked who he needed to thank Ausano said, “My crew guy is named Gilly and he works hard every week. Before this main the car was broke until three minutes before we came out and he got all fixed.”
Then he thanked crew members Mikey, Kevin Hiltin and Al. And he added special appreciation to Tori Edgington, who had their baby exactly a month before.
It took three attempts to get the IMCA main started. On the first try Mark Skender was left facing backwards at the entrance to Turn 3.
Then on the second try Fred White’s car stopped, got a push, stopped again then got another push. So the field lined up again for another try.
This time, as in the earlier ones, Missy Natenstedt took off and left Skender in her dust. Behind her Malen Gonzalez and David Sciarroni began an almost race long duel between themselves as they also tried to catch Skender.
Up front Natenstedt was on cruise control and she showed everyone her heels. At the end Skender was second while Gonzalez took third dropping Sciarroni to fourth.
“I’m not really sure why we did three restarts as usually we only do one. It was fun, the track went real dry slick and made it a driver’s track and that’s what I set up for,” she said. “I had to start at pole so I can’t complain and I was just racing for fun.”
Then she thanked her husband Shawn and Sciarroni, who works on her car as well as sponsors SM Handyman and Liberty Fitness.
Unfortunately the IMCA champion and Track Champion, Zach Cail wasn’t present so he couldn’t be honored at the end of the race.
For the Outlaw Karts the day was a marathon that began around 9 a.m. as they not only made up for the July 4th race but ran their program first due to the Mud Drags happening that night.
During the intermission the kart champions were honored; Guage Felzke in Beginners, Robert McBroome in Box Stock and the 250cc champion Blake Rauscher. The the karts drove in five-lap demonstration races before retiring to the pits.
After that it was time for the Dynamic Diesel Mad Metal Mud drags. Five classes were present so the show was split with three racing first then the last two after the cars were finished.
Virginia Bushek showed why she is the point leader in Stock 4&6 cylinder class as she beat all challengers including her father Sean. The Super Stock winner was Tom Jones while Blaine Plummer topped the Modified division.
Tammy Harmony, the point leader for the Stock V-8 class won her races while Richard Lozano was the Unlimited winner.
Now that the point season is over the track will prepare for the annual Dirt Track Championships on Sept. 26-27. Racing on Saturday begins at 5 p.m. and starts on Sunday at 1 p.m.
