Racing preview for this weekend is again a menu of varied motosport events both in our region, on TV and the Internet.
This weekend Fallon is the site of two very different events. The biggest is probably the VORRA/Ultra 4 Regional race known as the Fallon 250 and the pit area is east of Fallon around Salt Wells.
Registration is on Friday, at Stockman’s Casino from 1 to 5 p.m. and competitors can inspect the course but at their own risk.
Then at 6 a.m. Saturday production classes, 9, 11 and Full Metal start with a time limit of 9-hours. At 7 a.m. all the other limited classes, including UTV launch with an 8-hour time limit.
Racing for all the morning classes ends at 3 p.m. as the Unlimited Classes get ready for their race. That begins at 4 p.m. and ends at midnight so there will be a lot of night running for everyone.
And the awards presentation is Sunday at 11 a.m. at Convention Center.
South of Fallon, Top Gun Raceway will also be in action this weekend. It all begins Friday around 6 p.m. with $5 Friday where drivers can test and tune their cars.
Then at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday the track holds its next ET rounds and the Junior Dragsters are part of the show on both days.
Saturday’s racing has a special feature; the fifth annual Mopar Invitational. Racing is free to all Mopars who buy into either the Test-n-Tune, Sportsman or Pro Classes but no electronics.
The races are held after all the other classes are completed, all Mopar entrants get a free BBQ and prize money will be paid down to the semis.
At 6 p.m. Saturday, Fernley 95A Speedway hosts its next points races. All the car classes will be featured including the IMCA Modifieds where there is a battle between Robert Miller and Jake Holland for the championship.
And as we head toward fall racing on the TV is getting more and more interesting since every point counts.
On Thursday Fox Sports 2 will broad case a TORC Off Road race at 6 p.m. while at 8 p.m. NBC Sports re-airs the K&N Pro Series West event from Colorado.
Friday’s TV, starting at 11:30 a.m., is full of NASCAR practice and qualifying as the Xfinity series visits Road America.
On Saturday, at noon, NBC Sports airs the Xfinity race from Road America.
This week the Sprint Cup series gets the weekend off but on Labor Day the racers return to Darlington, NASCAR’s first super speedway. For Kyle Busch the next two races are critical as he’s 28th in points and needs to stay in the top 30 to make the championship chase.
Sunday begins at 4:30 a.m. as Fox Sports 1 shows the Moto GP Championship event from Silverstone, England. Then at 10:30 a.m. the network airs the Camping World Truck Series race from Canada.
Finally the afternoon ends at 1 p.m. when the Indy Cars take to the hilly road course at Sonoma Raceway and that race is broadcast on NBC Sports. The drivers will race even though the Indy Car community still has heavy hearts over losing Justin Wilson last weekend in an accident at the Pocono track.
Last week the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series wrapped up with Ryan Dungey winning the 450 title and Jeremy Martin taking the 250 crown.
Over on the Internet, www.fanschoice.tv has a Saturday full of short track racing from across the country. And two wheel fans can watch the AMA Flat Track race starting at 11 a.m.
While watching racing on TV nothing beats being at a track live for the color, sound and excitement of racing. No matter if its at an oval, drag strip or out on the desert watching the VORRA/Ultra 4 event.
It’s a great way to spend time outside and enjoy the sport with the family.
