95A SPEEDWAY REPORT

95A Speedway has another night of hard racing as points are becoming very important plus one race that has an extra bonus for the winner.

This week’s races at the 95A Speedway have many incentives for drivers as one was trying to score his first victory of the year, after a winning season last year. And another was trying to win the last race for some bonus money so it made for some Saturday Night Thunder.

“The race wasn’t bad, we could pass high, low or where ever we needed to be,” Cory Sample said after winning the IMCA feature. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had a car this good at this track and it really felt good as we won more than half last year. With this new car, we’ve been working on it and working on it.”

Then he thanked his father Rodney Sample for all the hard work he’s done on the car. A factor in Sample said was a major reason for him scoring his first overall victory at 95A this season.

When the green waved on the 17-car field Mark Skender, from the pole, and David Sciarroni led the charge into the first turn. Coming onto the backstretch Sciarroni was in the lead with the pack not far behind.

Behind the leader Jake Holland, Robert Miller, Sample were making their way toward the front.

The first caution came when Skender’s car stopped at the top of Turn 4 and bunched the field. But the problems were enough to end Skender’s night.

On the restart Sciarroni took off with Paris Archie and Travis White close behind. Right behind them were the quartet of Holland, Sample, Miller and Shawn Natenstedt.

Three laps later there was another caution when Eli Zuker spun. After the green waved again Sample jumped into second with Miller, Natenstedt and Holland following.

Zuker would spin again and then head for the pits due to the two-caution rule.

On the green Sciarroni took off but this time Sample used the high line to be on point as they tore out of Turn 2. Once again there was another caution that slowed the pace.

This time the officials started using single file restarts. When racing resumed Sample took off but this time Miller was chasing him, as Sciarroni slipped back to third where he finished the race.

As for Holland, who went into the night just one point behind Miller, it could have been a better evening. He did have a long due for third with Sciarroni but then slipped back to fifth as Rocky Goetz took ended up fourth at the end.

Further back Vince Evenson was having a pretty good night. Lately he’s had to battle mechanical problems with the car but on this night the Pershing County High School senior had a solid drive and finished eighth for the night behind seventh placed Royce Goetz and Alec Childs, who ended up sixth.

Up front however, no matter how hard Miller tried, it was Sample’s night and he reached the checkered flag first.

Later runner-up Miller said, “We survived, had a decent car and the track was good. Cory and them got their car rolling and he did a good job. Got up front first, took off and did a great job. We had another finish so we’re happy.”

Then he congratulated the Sample crew on its victory and thanked his crew and sponsors for their support.

The Pro Stock field was pretty stout as Saturday was the final $1,000 to win race. Even before the main began two potential contenders were out.

B.J. Pearson’s Nuclear Banana, that has won three of these events with Malen “The Shoe,” Gonzalez at the wheel. However this time the car was beset with problems and didn’t make the feature.

Travis Peterson’s car was hit during a heat race and had some of the suspension pushed into the transmission so he ended the night trailing a long cloud of smoke. He decided to retire the car for the night rather to risk damaging it any more.

When the green waved Rob Grace took off with Al Goss and Gary Nevers giving chase. Soon after that the caution came out when Goss had to retire as his car suffered mechanical issues.

Then on the restart there was a tangle in Turn 2 that took out almost half of the remaining cars. And it took several minutes to get the wounded cars back to their pits.

When the green waved again Grace took off with Nevers and Darrick Rauscher giving chase. Soon Nevers was solo in second as Grace was leaving all of them.

Then, in the final laps, Grace slowed and Nevers was able to catch up to him.

Asked about that Grace said, “I missed my mark, got distracted and that opened the door for Gary but we still held on for the win.”

However in those final laps any mistake by Grace would have let Nevers possibly get past for the lead. In the end Grace won the race and collected the bonus.

“The race was not too bad but my car was missing a little bit and I was like, ‘what the heck is going on.’ Don’t know if it was an ignition problem or what, then it would clear out and I’d start gaining on them,” Grace said. “But we still held on for the win.

Then he thanked is wife for putting up with his racing as well as his brother Lonnie that build the car and the motor and crew chief Rob Malson and his wife Marsha.

And his sponsors for their support, TJ’s DJ’s, Century 21, Mike Diesel and Auto Repair, Kathy and Mike Vandader, Deb and Dave Tilly, Deb and Bill Agard, Depot Casino and Skip’s Market as they buy his fuel, Parson’s Drilling and Frank’s Automotive.

The Street Stock started then stopped when Dwight Bolton spun in the first lap and wound up on top of the Turn 4 berm. After freeing him the field reformed and took off.

Dwight Bolton did his best but he couldn’t get around Street Stock winner Rick Miller (88).

Up front Rick Miller was on point but soon had Bolton in hot pursuit and they had a short side-by-side duel but in the end Miller reached the checkered flag first and claimed the victory.

“I needed that win and I need them all,” Miller said later. “The race was good, Dwight tried to get along side of me so I kind of moved up and put in the marbles.”

Then he thanked Steve Shuman, owner of Shuman’s Custom Cycles, as he buys Miller’s fuel.

When the Dwarf Car main began Bobby Wilson and Calvin Ryle were side by side until Wilson took the point in Turn 2.

Then the race was stopped after Jeff Foster’s car slid along the back stretch wall and came to a stop. Fortunately he was uninjured but his car needed to be towed to the pits.

Once the race restarted Joe Frock jumped ahead and started a side-by-side duel with Wilson. In the end Frock wound up on point and in control as he roared off to claim another victory.

At the award’s presentation, Frock said, “The race was good, track was real nice, smooth and fast. I could pretty much control the race, just go my own pace and do my thing.”

Then he thanked sponsors, HRT Racing, Wild Island, Axcel Sports, DRI, Mission Motor Sports Designs and Nature’s Bakery.

David Paine and Dennis Crook started the Super Stock 4 race side by side with Crook taking the point. Behind him Stephen Crook was after Paine and soon took over second.

Behind the leaders Justin Busch had moved into fourth and was after Paine’s third place.

Stephen Crook went out in a blaze as his car suffered a motor fire and he pulled onto the infield close to where the emergency crew was stationed. They quickly put the first out but his night was over.

On the restart Dennis Crook took off and soon had Busch on his back bumper. On the final lap going into the final turn Busch used the inside line to take the lead and victory.

First on point was Jim Paulk in his Mustang but soon Rich Innis made the winning pass in Turn 3 and was never headed. Shawn Burton in his Rabbit was able to finish second while Paulk was third.

OTHER RACING NEWS

  • NASCAR’s top two series raced at separate venues this weekend. In Saturday’s Xfinity race at the Mid-Ohio road course Nevada native Brendan Gaughan started and finished 12th.

On Sunday the Sprint Cup event was at Michigan where Kurt Busch started 16th but ended up 20th at the end. Younger brother Kyle was in the top 10 until a late stop for fuel and tires dropped him to 11th after starting 6th.

With three races to go Kyle Busch is now 29th in points but still has to finish in the top 30 to qualify for the championship Chase. And there are three races to go before points are reset.
