Double points always insure there will be plenty of action during the races. And the Hobby Stock division proved that saying correct.
FALLON (July 8) – Double points were on the line at Rattlesnake Raceway this weekend and a large field of Hobby Stocks were on hand to race for those points. The IMCA field was small due to a two-day race south in Tonopah.
After the dust settled the Hobby Stock winner was glad he missed an opening lap melee.
“It was pretty close and the people that were caught up were right in front of me,” David Ausano said later. “But I started dead las as I’m the points leader so I just wanted to get those first couple of laps under my belt. I wasn’t really in too much of a hurry those first couple of laps so I’d just pick them off one at a time and patience paid off.”
When the 17-car field took the green they roared through the second turn and that’s when things came unglued. Apparently Larry Conner spun and wound up in the back stretch wall.
Shane Cazel couldn’t stop in time as he had cars on his left, was collected and he too wound up in the wall. Paul Shamlin was also involved in the incident.
Further up the track there was another three car tangle and Jason Irwin got the worst of that as his car lost its left rear wheel. Shamlin, Conner and finally Irwin were all towed to the pits as their night was over.
Once the survivors were lined up the green waved again this time Adam Gilmore took off followed by Barlett, who started on the outside pole, and Jeff Tuttle.
Behind him Dan Edgington was on a charge through the pack and took the lead with an outside move two laps later. From that point it appeared it was his race as he was leaving everyone in his dust.
Around the 10-lap mark Jordon Riley slowed in Turn three while John DeBrum spun in Turn 2 bringing out a caution.
When racing resumed Edgington took off with Barlett holding down second. By now Ausano was in fourth as he continued his charge to the front.
By around lap 16, Edgington had a half a lap advantage over the rest of the field. Then with about four or five laps to go Edgington slowed due to some mechanical problem and limped to the pits.
Then another caution flew after Tuttle got a flat and had to limp into the pits.
When the green waved again Barlett was again in the lead but this time Ausano was right behind him and needed only one more lap to grab the point. Then on with a little over one to go another caution came out.
On the restart Ausano took off while Shane Cazel grabbed second and tried to catch the leader. They would finish in that order followed by Barlett and Gilmore taking third and fourth.
Right after taking the checkered the hood on Riley’s car flew up but he could see enough to get around the track and into the pits.
Asked about his car, Ausano said, “Luckily my car worked really good on the high side and most of the cars that aren’t so fast hugged the bottom so I kind of hovered on the outside and picked them off one at a time. Tonight was double points so we kept our nose clean, worked our way to the front and and I should be 17 points in the lead by now.”
One motivation is that his girl friend is about to give birth and probably will this week. Then he thanked Tori Edgington, Edgington Motors for their help as well as sponsors Wet and Wild Water Company and Performance by Gilly.
Coming home second was Shane Cazel, who was trying to catch Ausano at the end. Not a bad finish as his car was one of those involved in the first lap melee.
“It wasn’t even one lap and I ate the wall and into another car. I couldn’t avoid it, cars to my left and the wall to my right so I just hit the brakes and ate one of the cars,” he said.
Asked about the effect the rumpled nose of his car had he answered, “The temperature jumped up a little bit but the steering and everything was still good so it handled really good. At the end I was trying, I’d have needed a few laps but I was going after him (Ausano).”
Then he thanked his wife, three daughters as well as sponsors DOB Clothing and Atomic Stone for their support.”
For Ausano the night was a sweep as he won both his heat race and the main.
The Hobby Stocks also had a fast and slow dash. Cody Morris won the slow dash while Edgington won the fast dash.
There was also a Dash for Cash in the IMCA division and Zach Cail won that one.
Coming to the green for the IMCA feature Trevor Gurley’s car lost the cover over its fuel cell and part of the rear panel so he made a quick stop in the pits.
When the green finally waved Vince Evenson took of and led the charge. On this night he was running the same number Fred White usually does to gain that driver some points.
Right after the start Cail took second after moving past Chris Neal and the others. Then on the fifth lap Zail used an inside move to get past Evenson and take the lead.
From that point it was Cail’s race and he showed his heels to the rest of the pack. Behind him Neal was chasing Evenson but never got that close but further back Gurley, Reldon Hatch and Jake Aker were battling for fourth.
In the end Cail scored his first IMCA win with Evenson second and Neal taking third.
“The race was pretty good as the track came in for me. Started in the back but its not the way I wanted to win my first one with so little cars,” Cail said. “The track was pretty slick but I’m underpowered as I still have my Sport motor but the track came to me at the right time so I guess it was my night.”
Then he thanked his sponsors, CMF Fabrication. Shelton’s Pest Management as well as family members Brett, him mother, grandparents, cousins and sisters.
Rounding out the show were Kids rides during the intermission as well as a short fireworks show.
OTHER RACING NEWS
- The top two NASCAR divisions spent the weekend on the classic road course at Watkins Glen. In Saturday’s Xfinity event Brendan Gaughan started 13th and finished 10th after a strong run.
Last week Kyle Busch, who missed 11 races after injures sidelined him, was leading the race at Pocono but ran out of fuel on the final lap. This finish put him outside of the top 30 in points, a place he has to achieve to get into the fall’s championship chase.
At Sunday’s Sprint Cup race he worked his way into the lead only to fall back to 21st when he had to make a late race fuel stop.
After working his way to third, and back into the top 30 in points, he got a give when leader Kevin Harvick ran out of fuel just before the final turn handing the win to Joey Logano. Busch was able to nip Harvick at the line to claim second and get back into the top 30 in points.
Older brother Kurt Busch had a great race starting 41st and finishing fifth.
There are four more races until the field is set for the chase and two of them are on short tracks.
