Rattlesnake Raceway hosted a night full of carnage, cautions and hard racing.
Fallon (July 25) – It was a wild night, at least for the cars at Rattlesnake Speedway this week. As for the fans, well they probably all the action anyone could possible want.
“It was good except I would have like to have gone through traffic to win the race,” Dave Sciarroni said after winning the IMCA feature. “But after the last two races, trying to change stuff on the car and making it through only a few hand full of laps, we stuck to what we’ve been doing and the car was much better in the main event.”
After the 13-car field started its second lap the race came to a sudden halt. Fred White hit the wall and that set off a melee sending cars in almost all directions.
Some were lucky and evaded the mess while others ended their night before even reaching the first turn. Mark Skender was one of them as he was towed back to the pits with broken suspension and Zack Cail would also be towed to the pits but he was able to return.
Missy Natenstedt, although able to continue, went flying into the mud at the inside of the track where she would have to be pushed back on the track. She now gets the title of “IMCA Mud Hen,” as Tami Buehn is the Hobby Stock Mud Hen.
As soon as White hit the wall the red flag was thrown stopping the race. He hit the wall hard, was shaken up and had to be helped out of his car. After the EMT took him back to the pits the outside medics were summoned to check on White.
While his night didn’t end right there Vincent Evenson made it to Turn 3 where his transmission jammed, spilling a lot of its fluid onto the track. So his night was ended.
After a long clean up the survivors formed up again for a restart. Like the first time Sciarroni led the charge with Shawn Natenstedt giving chase.
Right after racing resumed it slowed again for a caution when Chris Neal wound up on the infield. He was able to continue however.
After some quick repairs, Cail returned to the fray although he was several laps down. Once again Scairroni got the best of Shawn Natenstedt on the restart.
“I kind of knew with Shawn (Natenstedt) on the outside that he has a crate motor now. And having raced crate motors on asphalt I kind of know their weaknesses,” Scairroni said later. “So I knew I needed to get him bogged down as much as I could on the start and hope for the rest.”
Well that worked because Natenstedt was left in Sciarroni’s dust then spun himself out of contention in Turn 4 with about five laps to go. Behind the leader Don Childs and Alec Childs had a long duel for second.
In the final laps Shawn Natenstedt was having problems getting around his wife Missy.
In the final lap or two Shawn finally got around Missy and took fourth place. Ahead of him Sciarroni scored the victory while Don and Alec Childs took the next two places.
Back in the pits Sciarroni said, “It was fun, I kind of got lazy towards the end then kind of had to pick myself up a little bit and fight again.”
Then he thanked his father, Shawn and Missy Natenstedt as well as sponsors Pro 1 Automotive, David White D.D.S. and Zunuz Shoes.
It took two attempts to get the race started but it only lasted until the field reached Turn 3. Apparently there was enough dust to cause at least one car to slow setting off a chain reaction.
The results was Adam Gilmore’s car was smashed after hitting the Turn 3 wall and the car Dan Dias suffered enough damage to end his night. Tony Taylor’s car wound up going into the backstretch wall and collected Dias.
There was a delay as officials first tried to get everyone in order than send them off the track so it could be watered. At the first attempt half went off before they were supposed to, then came back and everyone got in their order and exited the track.
After the water truck did it business the cars were called back and the green waved to start the race. Up front Scott Tenney, starting from the pole, was on point followed by Rob Carey, whose car was smoking like it did during his heat race.
Four laps into the race Larry Oliveira and Paul Shamlain both wound up in the back stretch wall. Then on the restart there was a spin while Dennis Buehn pitted to have a flat tire changed.
When the green waved again Christiano took second while behind him Taylor, despite having a wounded car, was moving through the pack. The next caution came after the hood of Crystal Kontny would fly up every time she got any speed.
Christiano had to make a quick visit to the pits and Rob Carey took over second. Then another caution came after two other cars tangled with the result that Joe Wiltz was sent to the pits while the car of Michael Bartlett had to be pushed to the pits.
Once that mess was cleaned up there were only 11 cars to take the green and the officials had the field make a single file start.
Up front Tenney was away while Dave Ausano was giving chase and Taylor, who was a few laps down, was third on the track..
Then with four to go Carey spins in Turn 4 and Dennis Buehn, trying to avoid him clipped his car.
Once again the field lined up for a restart. Taylor tried to get the advantage but Ausano took over second while Shane Cazel was third.
Tenney went on to take the win followed by Ausano and Cazel. Behind them Dennis Buehn and Carey tangled sending both of them onto the infield.
After all the carnage and cautions it took almost 90 minutes to run that race but the crowd seemed to love all the action they were seeing.
“Started up front and finishing up front, there’s no better way to run a race and it was a lot of fun,” Teeney said later. “I knew they were back there but never showed me enough to give me concern. I lost a brake, left rear, about halfway through the race, the pedal went soft but just hung on to it till the end.”
Then he thanked his girlfriend Candice for giving him a place to park his racecar while he’s down from Washington. He was also grateful to have his parents here to see him race as his father was supposed to drive the 121 car but do to medical issues Don Tenney was put in the seat where he finished seventh.
Rounding out the show were the Outlaw Karts, the next generation of racers that will compete on the big track.
When the 250cc main began Jacob Dias took off and ran away for the win. He was followed by Blake Rauscher and William Evenson.
First on point when the Box Stock main began was Xavier Frock who then slowed and stopped in Turn 1. This gave the lead to Evan Rauscher, who made the most of the gift and roared off to claim the victory.
The Beginners have been fielding the largest fields this season and this night was no exception as 15-karts took the green flag.
With the leader lapping the slowest kart in less than two laps every caution, and there were a few, required the officials to stop everyone and get them back into their required order.
It too two attempts to get the race underway and when it began for real Temperance Sherman was on point. Behind her Guage Felzke was on a mission and slicing his way through the pack.
Two cautions slowed the pace but, after Flezke took the lead he and Sherman remained one-two and finished in that order. But to do that both drivers had to slice their way through a lot of traffic.
The next race is a double points event on August 8th with a 6 p.m. start time to the action.
