HERRING MEMORIAL HONORS FALLEN RIDER AND ENDS SPRING SEASON FOR MRANN.
FERNLEY (June 21) – The Herring Memorial race on Father’s Day weekend honors a young rider that was lost seven years ago. This time, the sixth anniversary race, was staged at the Sandbox, or the Fernley Lion’s Motocross Park using all the available track, so one loop was between two and three miles.
And there was a log section the riders had to negotiate on the west side of the course.
When the expert winner got back to the pits he took off his gloves, looked at his blistered hands and said, “That definitely was a downer as about an hour into it I felt my hands going so I just tried to tough it out. This is the first one I’ve ever done and I’ll definitely be back for more.”
He added that his seat brackets broke about an hour into the event and the pit crew had to tape the seat in place.
All during the way the winds were increasing and reached their maximum during the two-hour long expert race. Sometimes it was almost blinding but then the wind would slow down and make things almost clear.
But since desert racers are a tough-breed, the dust didn’t seem to slow down anyone. So round and round they went for the duration of the event.
Kyle Townsend, coming back from an injury, was just trying to finish the race. After getting a flat rear tired he pulled into the pits where several fathers and others jumped in and changed it so he could be sent on his way.
Austin Serpa finished second and Steve Garnett came home third. In fact Garnett had a rooting section at the turn before riders passed the pits.
At the upper end of the age scale Pete Prichard and Michelle Danson were one-two in the 60 and older class.
For Conway the race was not only his first with MRANN but very different from the events he usually competes in.
“I race motocross, Super Cross and stuff like that and I’ll be doing the last five round of Endurocross this year,” he said. “I’m not used to a dead engine start so think I was probably dead last going into the first corner. But I made pretty quick ground, just tried to get out front, get some clean air and go from there.
He added the log section was fun and something he was looking forward to. Then he thanked his parents as they have really helped him out this year.
Then he added thanks to Tommy Livoti, Carson Motorsports for their help and Tech One Designs, as they’ve been supporting him since the company was started.
And of course as soon as the Expert race ended, as it was the last one on Sunday, the wind died down.
Like the Experts the Amateurs rode in a two-hour long race.
Each start was dead engine where all the motorcycles were shut off. Then when a banner was dropped or folded up the riders kicked their bike into action and took off.
Several of the amateurs made it to the first turn after the start then piled up. Fortunately only pride was injured and everyone was able to get back up and continue.
Up front however 15-year-old Austin Wilson had the bit between his teeth and was showing everyone his dust. While runner up Dino Rosa tried to make a race of it he never really got close to the flying Wilson.
Back in the pack Beth Legenbauer, who finished 14th, was the only Woman amateur in the race.
In the end Wilson had at least a half lap on second place and was greeted at the finish by his father, fellow MRANN racer Josh Wilson.
“I’m really tired now,” Wilson said after catching his breath. “Got the hole shot, pretty much finding the smoothest lines out there, just cruised my own race and came out with the win. The track’s getting really beat up, the logs aren’t that bad right now but some of them move and it changes every lap but other than that, they’re pretty easy. But getting around the lappers really tired me out.”
Then he thanks his parents, “without them I wouldn’t be here,” as well as sponsors MX Trophies, D1H, RMS and Dirt Tricks.
Sunday began with the Novice race, which was 90-minutes long. After the start Jonathon Sawyer held the point and let everyone know he was in charge.
No one even got close to him although runner up Chris Martin did try. While many riders are young, Kevin Hager, riding in the Over 40 division, rode to a strong fourth place.
After winning the event Sawyer said, “It was pretty fun, the track just kept getting rougher and rougher ever lap but its just part of the sport. I think it’s better to be that far ahead because you know the last place guy is somewhere up there and it just gives you a marker to go after.”
Then he thanked his father for letting him come out and sponsors Pro Taper, Yamaha, ASV, MSR and Smith Goggles.
The only woman in the race was 14-year-old Amanda Ross, who talked her mother into letting her ride. The soon to be high school freshman rode a solid race and ended up 27th in the 32 rider field.
“This is my first big bike race and before the start I was like really nervous, “oh boy there’s a lot of people.’ Then afterwards it wasn’t really that bad as I guess the main things is to just watch out for people and ride your own ride,” she said. “I should have fallen a couple of times but I didn’t, managed to hold my own a little bit, battled with a couple of people and it was pretty fun.”
Then she thanked her mom as well as the Ponsock/Dingley family and the other riders. And she added special thanks to the Corey Herring Club for putting on the event.
• Saturday had a program all of its own as the youngest riders, Mini Bikes, Women and Bomber racers got their chance.
The Pee Wee’s raced on a one-mile long track while the others were timed events on the big track.
Ryder Tomaselli was the Pee Wee winner as he rides in the 65cc Novice division and fifth place Seth Rigsby ws the 7 to 9 winner. In the youngest division, 6 and Under the winner was Wyatt Ranken while Genevieve Miller was the 4-Stroke victor.
In the Mini Bike event Kody Gray, who rides in the 100 Amateur class, was the overall winner followed by two Experts, Brice Tremine and Alek Simone.
Chrystal Ponsock not only won the V Women’s race but beat Bomber rider Robert Austin, who was the runner up.
On Saturday it was estimated there were around 85 riders competing. While on Sunday, 98 riders started in the three races.
Now everyone gets the summer off until MRANN’s fall season, which is the second half of the year’s season, begins in early September.
