- This week there is a traditional hybrid race featuring a cross between motocross and desert racing. It’s the 4th Annual Sandbox Grand Prix staged at the Fernley Lion’s Motocross Track.
Saturday’s action begins at 12:30 a.m. with a race combining Women, 65cc and 100cc plus Vintage and Bomber bikes. Then the Pee Wees take to the track followed at 2:30 p.m. with a 90-minute team race for the Men, Women and Bombers.
The big bikes take to the track Sunday morning with a series of motos beginning at 8 a.m. After those are completed the GP, or team race is flagged off at 2 p.m. as riders compete in a two-hour long event.
Since it’s a team race each rider does a flying lap then hands off a wristband to a teammate that also does a flying lap. The race is for bragging rights and a trophy.
- On Saturday, starting at 2 p.m. the Fernley 95A Speedway begins its season with all the car classes including the new Street Stocks. This event usually has a large car count as area drivers are ready to get back to racing.
- Saturday is also the start of tech and practice sessions at the Wild West Motorsports Park as VORRA begins its short track season here. After practice session Sunday morning the first motos begin at 10 a.m. as cars, trucks, buggies and UTV race around this hilly, fast course.
On Television there’s something for almost everybody.
- NASCAR will be at the Paper Clip, or Martinsville this weekend. Fox Sports 1 broadcasts the Camping World Truck race Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday’s Sprint Cup event at 10 a.m.
- After the KTM Steam Roller was stopped last week the AMA Supercross series moves to St. Louis. Once again Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the racing beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday evening.
• The big news out of Formula One was the cancellation of the German Grand Prix in July. One promoter had financial problems while the other felt they didn’t have enough time to sell tickets. However the race from Malaysia is on and NBC Sports broadcasts it starting at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
- And this weekend the Indy Car season begins with the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg broadcast on ABC begining at noon Sunday.
Drag racing fans are also included as the 4-Wide Nationals will be at Charlotte this weekend. Here the dragstrip has four, rather than the standard two lanes.
The final eliminations will be broadcast live starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday on ESPN.
• Two-wheel fans can watch the FIM MXGP from Argentina starting at 2 p.m. Sunday on CBS Sports.
• MAVTV still has a lot of racing but all the programs are re-broadcasts from last year. On Thursday they will broadcast the Dirty 30 program at 10 a.m. followed at 10:30 by Inside Drag Racing and at 1 p.m. with the SRL Series from Las Vegas.

Nice meeting you this weekend and chatting at the Sandbox pit during the team race, Dan. I was the guy with the sprained ankle.
Best wishes on the recovery. I’m just starting to put the article together so will be posted
later this afternoon or early evening. Take care.
