Fernley (March 8) — Motocross is back! Last fall there was only one race after the plug was pulled on the fall series.
Over the winter local Over the Hill Gang members rolled up their sleeves, secured use of the Fernley Lion’s Motocross track and started helping the Old Timers chapter come back to life.
Now both clubs along with Tim O’Brien at the Livfast Exit 28 track have breathed life back into regional racing with the first event of a shortened spring season being staged this weekend.
This time it was the OTHG’s turn as they staged a two-day event. On Saturday, which was practice day, around 240 riders showed up and Sunday the rider count was right around 300, which shows promise for the future.
It took 17 motos to get in the racing and everyone had a great time. And a few riders swept their motos with a trio scoring victories in two different classes.
After the dust settled on the first 250/450 pro race a Reno rider scored his first victory of the day.
“The track’s good today, a lot better than yesterday, it’s prepped up, wet and I’m having a good time,” Billy Adams said after taking the checkered flag. “All the jump faces are pretty steep today so you just kind of watch out for all the kickers.”
Then he thanked his parents for getting him to the races was his Aunt Suzie for sponsoring him.
After his second moto, which he again won in convincing fashion he said, “It was an awesome day, just having a blast on my bike. The track’s actually holding up really good, they did a prep job between motos and it shaped up a lot better than I thought it would.”
Another veteran having a great time was Dustin Miller, who normally does freestyle motocross. And he too scored two runaway victories in the 30+ Pro class and was runner-up in the 250/450 pro class.
After taking his first checkered flag he said, “I raced the young bucks in the 450 pro but it kind of wore me out so I took it easy in this one but still got the win. It’s good to ride with the older guys as they get tired too. The track’s really fun, been a long time since I’ve been here so it’s kind of wearing me out a little but hopefully I’ll have enough the second round.
Jeff Klino was scored a second and third in each moto to take the day’s runner up spot.
After winning his second moto Miller said, “I felt pretty good and I think its “beer ‘thirty.’ The track’s really fun, the bumpier it gets it kind of slows down a little bit and that’s a little better for me. I also do a lot of stuff for Monster Energy so people can find me on Facebook or Instagram.”
Two pro classes only had one rider in them. Scott Stillmock, who along with his brother Butch used to rule the Sandbox was the 38+ Pro winner while Ryan Ferris took the 125/250 victories.
After Ferris won his first pro moto he said, “Unfortunately I’m racing by myself, no body signed up so I’m just out here having fun with the kids. Having a blast, being on my bike. The track is great, they’re doing a great job today.”
Then he thanked his wife Alex and daughter Leighton for their support as well as his friend at 180 Decals that supply the graphics for his bike.
Ferris was one of the riders that scored victories in two classes as he also won the 25+ Open motos. The other one was Ashleigh Trapanese, who scored wins in both the 125/250 Beginner and Women’s classes.
After winning her second Women’s moto she said, “It was fun but it’s rough and the jumps were my favorite parts.”
Then she gave thanks to her family, parents and grandparents, as well as to sponsors Testa Motorsports and Tech One Designs.
There was a very good field in the Women’s class with a dozen of them showing up. When the gate dropped Tranpanese took off with Carson City rider Jordan Beck in hot pursuit followed by Shami Potratz and Sedanna Losey.
However there was no catching Trapanese as she tore around the course and flew over the jumps. So in the end Beck had to settle for the runner-up spot ahead of Potratz.
The same race saw the Supermini riders included with the women. The youngsters were launched first then the women.
In the second Supermini moto the race was between T.J. Taylor, going for a sweep, and Julian Domingo, who was making a race of it. Lap after lap they tore around the track but in the end Taylor held on to score the victory.
“It was great, the track was great and everything. I knew Julian was there so I was trying to stay clean, not make any mistakes and putt he win,” Taylor said after winning the race.
Then he thanked him mom, Testa Motorsports, Lance MX Training, One Industries, Revelant Motocross and Veracity Caps.
Several classes virtually filled the starting gates and there were plenty of younger riders that are the next generation of the sport.
Young Cash Dunbar was another double class winner when he took both the Pee Wee 7-8 and open classes while Zade White as the 4-6 winner. Moving up the age bracket Trey Maskaly, Wyatt Brixey and Chase Cannizzaro won their respective 65cc classes.
Moving up the 85cc winners were Tommy Jackson in beginners while the junior winner was Casey Carmichael. And in the open class Dylan Thorwaldson carried on his family’s racing tradition as he won the 85cc open class.
After a winter’s layoff for many riders, even though many of them have been riding but not racing some crashes were expected.
One involved a spectacular over-the-handlebars crash of a rider coming down from a jump. Another incident involved five to seven bikes that came together just yards after leaving the starting gate for the second 125/250 beginner moto.
Fortunately, even after those two crashes, the medics didn’t have to transport anyone to the hospital for the incidents that happened on Saturday or Sunday. Although some that crashed were advised to seek a checkup after they left the track.
Just about everyone asked has nothing but compliments about the day, getting back to racing and how the track was set up.
Ryan Ferris, after sweeping the 25+ open races said, “I had a blast coming out her today and thanks to everyone for putting on the race. They did a great job, the track is beautiful today, stayed great all day long and I can’t give them enough thanks and props for that.”
OTHER RACING NEWS
- The second Motocross race of the season will be this weekend at the Livfast Exit 28 track east of Sparks. As usual the first motos will begin sometime between 9 and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
• The only Nevadan racing in NASCAR’s top three series is Brendan Gaughan. He competed in Saturday’s Xfinity event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, started fifth, was as high as second but faded to sixth in the final laps of the race.
Kyle Busch is recovering from a second surgery, this one on his left foot, and will be on the sidelines for the next few weeks. Older brother Kurt had the criminal part of a court action removed and is working with NASCAR’s reinstatement program but there is no date for his return to racing.
