TOWNSEND WINS MRANN RACE

Blue Wing Flag (March 1) – MRANN journeyed about 25 miles west of Toulon beside a not too dry lake for it’s second race of the season. The Wide Open 120 was the combined effort by the Cheaters and Rimbenders Motorcycle Clubs.

Sunday’s big bike race, featured an almost race long duel between two young lions as they battled for the win.

“It was really good, really fast but my suspension was kind of blown out there. I have no suspension so every time I’d hit a corner it would just pack in and slip out but my stabilizer helped a lot,” Kyle Townsend said after first overall. “On the first lap I got him (Powers) on the dry lake bed, then crashed and he got around me. Then on the second lap I got him on the dry lakebed again, never crashed so I held him off.”

Then he gave special thanks to sponsors RMS, AXO, One Industries and his family.

This time the riders had to stand a ways from their bikes at the start. Once a banner was dropped the rush was on as they jumped on their bikes, started and took off.

When the expert line launched, on point heading toward the first corner was Dan Capparelli, followed by Irving Powers and Corey Fletcher. At the first turn Powers almost dug one of his handlebars into the ground but was able to recover and chase the leader.

Irving Powers almost had his race cut short when he just about put a handle bar into the dirt while chasing Dan Capparelli (6) at the expert start.

Soon after the experts headed toward a dry lake Powers took the lead then surrendered it to the charging Townsend, who then went down and gave the lead back to Powers.

Coming into the pits Powers was six seconds ahead of Townsend and when they left the gap was five second and closing fast as they headed across the dry lakebed.

Soon Townsend, despite his suspension problems, made the winning pass and extended his lead until the finish when he held an advantage of over a minute.

After getting his breath Powers said. “It was good, rode solid all day, no crashes but pretty much wasn’t geared right. That’s kind of where he got me but Kyle rode a really good race. Just wished I was a little more used to this bike as I got it a couple of weeks ago.

“This part of the dry lakebed is scary so I let him have it as it was so slippery.”

Then he thanked sponsors McCoy’s Off Road, MX Trophies, Brad Kohler, Chip Johnson as well as his girlfriend, family and friends for their support.

Steve Garnett heads into the pits. His solid run paid off with a third overall in Sunday's MRANN race.

Coming home third was veteran Steve Garnett, who topped the 40+ Class, and was a few minutes behind his two younger rivals.

“They had me today for sure so I guess old age is catching up with me as those guys are pretty fast,” he said. “I was probably hitting 90 or at least 95 on the dry lake sections and some of the road. This was a very fast course, there were some nice canyons and stuff but other than that I’m pretty happy with this third overall.”

Then he thanked Lawn Pro, Jim O’Neil, the guys that support him, his wife Jamie and daughter Michael.

The amateur start didn't go so well for one rider as he went down rounding the first turn. Then he got up and chased the field.

Both top amateurs finished 19th and 20th after their two loops.

First in was Wyatt Brittner, who said, “It was awesome, so much fun and at the start I was third or fourth overall. Then we hit the dry lakebed and all the 450’s passed me so I had to catch all them back as I’m on a 300 two-stroke. The snow was pretty fun but on the first lap I struggled on it but the second I was ready for it and it was a lot of fun getting to ride in it.”

Then he thanked Reno Motorsports (RMS) and his parents.

Not far behind was Jeston Ponciano runner up in the amateur class.

“The dirt was awesome and the second look berms were building up so it was like a motocross track out there, well almost,” he said. “There were a lot of fast sections and this bike went as fast as it will go so it was scary fast. The snow on the second lap was slimy out there and I actually went down in it.

“So when Brittner got by me I went down again then just backed it off, kept it safe and made it down here in one piece.”

Asked who he wanted to thank Ponciano said, Paul Mudd at Cycles and Gear as well as his wife Diane.

The Novice riders had to content with dust at the first turn when their race started.

The first novice to finish both loops was Stacy Lewis, who ended up 50th overall.

After catching his breath he said, “It was just tough getting around all those amateurs in my way. The course was stellar, it was really fast and got a little sandy towards the end but you can expect that. The snow was white and slippery and I went down about four time but at a slow speed.”

Then he thanked his wife Lynna, who sings the national anthem at many UNR sporting events as well as at the race, his friends and God for taking care of him.

A little while later Beth Legenbauer was the first Woman’s amateur to finish both loops.

After getting some water from her husband she said, “That was really fun, very, very fast as I was going as fast as I’ve ever gone on a motorcycle. I don’t know if that’s pinned but it’s close. This canyon coming in was really fun, probably the best part of the course for me while the most challenging was the dry lakebed.”

Then she thanked RMS, CMS, Tankslappers and her husband Justin as well as their son and daughter.

All in all everyone had a good time and Saturday’s weather, which mostly missed the area, help set up the dirt for another great racing day.

• The weekend began on Saturday when the Pee Wee riders took off for their race which Sam McCord won. That was followed by a combined event with the Mini Bikes, V-Women and Bomber bikes.

Taking first overall was young Alek Siminoe, the first Mini Bike racer followed by Bryce Termaine. Coming 4th was the first woman Chrystal Ponsock while eighth place Darren Twikgar was the first Bomber to cross the finish.

Now everyone gets a few weeks off until the weekend of April 11-12 when MRANN heads for outside of Doyle, California.
