It’s a big week for racing on TV as three major touring series begin their year while another stages the second round of its season. So TV will be crammed with action this weekend.
Last Sunday was qualifying for the Great American Race, the 57th running of the Daytona 500 but only the front row was set. On Thursday the rest of the 43 grid spots will be filled with the two Budweiser Dual 150 races.
Those on the inside row race in one event while the rest on the outside row from qualifying also get their chance. Six drivers must race their way into the 500 and a crash can eliminate a driver’s chances.
The Dual races will be broadcast starting at 4 p.m. local time on Fox Sports 1. Then at 4:30 for short track fans the next round of the short track races from New Smyrna Speedway will also be aired but on www.fanschoice.tv.
In fact every evening, unless rain becomes a factor, fanschoice.tv will broadcast a short track race. Last year that internet network also aired the first two AMA flat track events but so far the schedule hasn’t shown if these races will be repeated.
Also on Thursday MAVTV is also offering motorsports programming. At 12:30 p.m. it’s the Dirty 30 then at 2 p.m. the SLR Racing Series from Irwindale Speedway in Southern California.
On Friday the Camping World Truck series opens its series on the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway. The race starts at 4 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
Then on Saturday the newly named Xfinity Series makes its first start on the high banks at 4 p.m. also on Fox Sports 1. Last year it was the Nationwide series.
MAVTV also has shows on Saturday with a noon re-air of the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship from Poland followed at 2:30 p.m. by Inside Drag Racing and at 4 p.m. by the Lucas Oil ASCA sprint car series from Yuma, Arizona.
This week the Supercross moves to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Once again Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the action with a 4 p.m. start time. And we’ll see if the Ryan Dungey KTM steamroller continues on its winning way.
Marvin Musquin won the first 250 East Supercross race last week in Texas and will try and repeat that feat this week in Georgia.
The Great American Race, or the Daytona 500 begins at 10 a.m. on Fox Sports 1. It will be Jeff Gordon’s final appearance as he retires from driving at the end of this season.
For the straight-line fans, the NHRA is in Phoenix this weekend and eliminations will be shown, starting at 5 p.m., on ESPN 2.
