TOULON (Sept. 28)
— Rain this weekend canceled one event but another soldiered on and ran its event.
Due to the conditions at the track and in the pits Rattlesnake Raceway postponed its annual Dirt Track Championship, a two-day event that brings the track’s season to a close.
Yet only about 60 miles away MRANN and District 36 ran their annual combined event, The Wild Horse and Wild Pony Enduro.
Unlike those racing on ovals, desert racers will compete in just about any type of weather.
Saturday’s rain, plus the cool weather made perfect conditions on Sunday as there was no dust to speak of.
The Wild Horse is run very differently from the usual MRANN event, in fact it’s more like a rally. There were several racing stages running from three miles to 18-miles in length and between each there is a section where the riders can relax and catch their breath on the way to the next stage.
And like a rally, the riders start every stage when a count down clock shows their number. As a result it takes over five hours to complete the entire race.
And scoring is also a whole lot slower.
Each rider has a paper form taped to their front fender that times are recorded there. Then after the event all the slips are gathered and totaled to give a rider’s finishing position.
This means the big bike results won’t be known until sometime this week.
On Saturday, despite the rain and slippery conditions Saturday Women, Mini Bikes and others that don’t race the full distance got their events in despite a steady rain that made for some slippery conditions. And their finishes were known by Sunday morning.
On the District 36 side Austin Tavares won the overall while Ron Wigington, riding out of the Virginia City Motorcycle Club, finished third. On the MRANN side Devynn Muhlenberg was first overall and first in Saturday Women while Ryder Schwartz, who races in the 7 to 11 Mini Bike class won his division and was sixth overall.
Hopefully sometime Sunday’s results will be posted at www.racemrann.com.
• The postponed Dirt Track Championships have been moved to this coming weekend setting up a racing marathon on Saturday.
Rattlesnake’s show begins Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Northern Nevada Outlaw Karts start their part followed at 11 a.m. as the stock cars take to the track. The program is run early so those wishing to race in Fernley that evening will have enough time to compete at both venues.
Saturday is Championship night for Fernley 95A Speedway that begins at 6 p.m. Local racer Josh Ogg and Cory Sample will duel for the track’s championship in the IMCA division.
The Northern Nevada Kart Club ends its season on Sunday, which is Championship Day for the club. Gates open at 6 a.m. followed by practice sessions, heat races and finally the main events. At least one title will be decided that afternoon.
Rattlesnake Raceway finishes the Dirt Track Championships on Sunday. The karts start at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. start to the cars. The championships are determined when a driver’s combined finishes are added together.
