    TOULON (Sept. 28) — Rain this weekend canceled one event but another soldiered on and ran its event. Due to the conditions at the track and in the pits Rattlesnake Raceway postponed its annual Dirt Track Championship, a two-day event that brings the track’s season to a close. Yet only about 60 miles away MRANN and District 36 ran their annual combined event, The Wild Horse and Wild Pony Enduro.     FALLON (Sept. 19) — This weekend marked the end of a long year for those that compete at Rattlesnake Raceway. It was the final points race of the season when a driver’s efforts can win a class championship, a better points position or go for naught.   It was all on the line the Friday night and everyone wanted to bring their A game to the show.   • RACING CALENDAR, SEPT 19 TO 21

    This weekend’s racing calendar has some changes as well as one track ending its season.   Lovelock Speedway was supposed to end its season this Saturday but the track canceled the final two events on its calendar. And the Northern Nevada Kart Club had to cancel the “Clone Wars,” event as there were not enough entries to cover expenses. On Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will host its final point race of the season.       STEAD AIRPORT (Sept. 14) – For the 51st year the sky north of Reno was filled with the sound of planes racing each other. The Reno National Championship Air Races is, with one exception, the only place on the planet where pilots race each other around a course.   And Sunday is when all the class champions are crowned after their individual Gold races.     STEAD (Sept. 12) – Women are part of every racing team at the air races however, with few exceptions, few are pilots. But one team, Lewis Air Legends (www.lewisairlegends.com) , has two women helping on the mechanical side of the operation. One has her A&P (Airframe and Power Plant.) certification while the other is working on earning hers.     STEAD (Sept. 10) – For the past few years the Reno National Championship Air Races have been streamed live over the Internet by Live Airshow TV.     STEAD (Sept. 9) – With Monday’s second session of Unlimited qualifying canceled the heavy iron brigade got busy Tuesday morning. This gave them some insurance incase some problems had to be settled or in one case a racing engine installed.   Everyone lined up in the first qualifying session and two of the most anticipated runs were by defending champion Steven Hinton in Voodoo and Stewart Dawson flying Rare Bear.       STEAD (Sept. 6) – With two races left on the schedule it’s time for drivers to seal the deal in their championship drives.   • TRAGEDY AT THE AIR RACES

    Stead Airport (Monday, Sept. 8) Tragedy struck the Reno National Championship Air Races this afternoon. During a qualifying session for the Sport Class there was a fatal crash. At the north end of the course the aircraft flown by Lee Behel suffered some kind of failure and went down. He was the president of the class and one of its founders. Behel’s racer was powered by a Chevy small block V-8 modified for aviation use. Behel is listed as retired and was a pilot for many years with the Nevada Air National Guard when they flew RF-4C Phantoms. And he

  • I-80 CHALLENGE AT 95A SPEEDWAY

    Fernley (Aug. 28/29) – Highlighting the Labor Day weekend was the first visit of the I-80 Challenge series to the 95A Speedway. This meant two nights of high speed IMCA Modified action and both winners also used it as a tune up for the Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa.   Both IMCA features were hard fought battles and a driver from Battle Mountain claimed Saturday’s victory. “We came over here as Cory (Sample) is going to haul my car to the Super Nationals.
