  • MARNN AT TOULAN + WEEK’S PREVIEW

TOULON (Sept. 28) — Rain this weekend canceled one event but another soldiered on and ran its event. Due to the conditions at the track and in the pits Rattlesnake Raceway postponed its annual Dirt Track Championship, a two-day event that brings the track’s season to a close. Yet only about 60 miles away MRANN and District 36 ran their annual combined event, The Wild Horse and Wild Pony Enduro. Unlike those racing on ovals, desert racers will compete in just about any type of weather. Saturday’s rain, plus the cool weather made perfect conditions on Sunday as there was

  • 95A SEASON WINDS DOWN

FERNLEY (SEPT. 20) With only two races left in its points season things are heating up at the Fernley 95A Speedway. It’s go time for any driver that wants to win a championship or improve their points position.   Many times in racing patience plays an important part as does the knowledge of when to go, when to just kind of hang back and how a dirt track can change during a 30-lap race. When the green waved Don Childs was first on point with Robert Miller giving chase. Eventually Miller would take the point but behind him both Cory

  • RATTLESNAKE’S CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT

FALLON (Sept. 19) — This weekend marked the end of a long year for those that compete at Rattlesnake Raceway. It was the final points race of the season when a driver’s efforts can win a class championship, a better points position or go for naught.   It was all on the line the Friday night and everyone wanted to bring their A game to the show. While the IMCA A Mods are usually the stars of the show they were upstaged by the more humble Hobby Stocks. In fact that division staged the race of the night during their

  • RACING CALENDAR, SEPT 19 TO 21

This weekend’s racing calendar has some changes as well as one track ending its season.   Lovelock Speedway was supposed to end its season this Saturday but the track canceled the final two events on its calendar. And the Northern Nevada Kart Club had to cancel the “Clone Wars,” event as there were not enough entries to cover expenses. On Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will host its final point race of the season. The car classes are featured and there will be a demolition derby that will probably close the show. Closer to home Fernley

  • CHAMPIONSHIP DAY AT THE AIR RACES

STEAD AIRPORT (Sept. 14) – For the 51st year the sky north of Reno was filled with the sound of planes racing each other. The Reno National Championship Air Races is, with one exception, the only place on the planet where pilots race each other around a course.   And Sunday is when all the class champions are crowned after their individual Gold races. This year’s event appeared to have the potential of being an epic race but in the end a young lion won the Breitling Gold Unlimited event and notched his sixth championship. It wasn’t exactly easy

  • WOMEN AT THE AIR RACES

STEAD (Sept. 12) – Women are part of every racing team at the air races however, with few exceptions, few are pilots. But one team, Lewis Air Legends (www.lewisairlegends.com) , has two women helping on the mechanical side of the operation. One has her A&P (Airframe and Power Plant.) certification while the other is working on earning hers. And both are volunteers working with the crew of La Patrona, an Unlimited F7F Tigercat owned by Rod Lewis. Allie Hoyt is currently living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “I got my private license six years ago, right when the economy decided to take

  • LIVE AIRSHOW TV STREAMS AIR RACES

STEAD (Sept. 10) – For the past few years the Reno National Championship Air Races have been streamed live over the Internet by Live Airshow TV. The company is the result of its president Jeff Lee blending his passion and experience to bring this to the event’s fans.   And the company started right here in Reno. “Live Airshow TV official formed right after the 2008 Reno Air Races,” he said. “In fact every year when we come here, on the Monday following the races we celebrate our anniversary.” The roots of this came from a long-term relationship when Lee

  • FAST TUESDAY AT THE AIR RACES

STEAD (Sept. 9) – With Monday’s second session of Unlimited qualifying canceled the heavy iron brigade got busy Tuesday morning. This gave them some insurance incase some problems had to be settled or in one case a racing engine installed.   Everyone lined up in the first qualifying session and two of the most anticipated runs were by defending champion Steven Hinton in Voodoo and Stewart Dawson flying Rare Bear. First off was Strega with many time champion Tiger Destefani at the controls. Despite having to qualify with his ferry engine, he posted a speed of 381.048 so he’s in

  • SOME TITLES CLINCHED AT NNKC

STEAD (Sept. 6) – With two races left on the schedule it’s time for drivers to seal the deal in their championship drives. So the Northern Nevada Kart Club’s latest races, which was a rare Saturday event, was very important.       At least three drivers clichéd championships and one of them notched crowns in two different classes. After winning the 125 Stock Moto main Mark Nason said, “My set up landed spot on again today. Here again, set up through the season from Mitch Kennedy. M y competitors have gotten faster as we were all within 3/10ths

  • TRAGEDY AT THE AIR RACES

Stead Airport (Monday, Sept. 8) Tragedy struck the Reno National Championship Air Races this afternoon. During a qualifying session for the Sport Class there was a fatal crash. At the north end of the course the aircraft flown by Lee Behel suffered some kind of failure and went down. He was the president of the class and one of its founders. Behel’s racer was powered by a Chevy small block V-8 modified for aviation use. Behel is listed as retired and was a pilot for many years with the Nevada Air National Guard when they flew RF-4C Phantoms. And he

  • VETERAN WANTS BOMBERS BACK

Glen Plake is known around the world for his exploits on skies. But he’s also a long time fan of racing and drives an IMCA Modified when he’s home from Europe.  At last week’s I-80 Challenge event, at the Fernley 95A Speedway, Plake shared his opinions of a class he feels the local oval track community needs. For the past couple of years he’s been talking about breathing new life into the defunct Bomber Class. A division he feels would increase the car counts as well as put more fans into the stands. “I know from my history, that’s how

  • I-80 CHALLENGE AT 95A SPEEDWAY

Fernley (Aug. 28/29) – Highlighting the Labor Day weekend was the first visit of the I-80 Challenge series to the 95A Speedway. This meant two nights of high speed IMCA Modified action and both winners also used it as a tune up for the Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa.   Both IMCA features were hard fought battles and a driver from Battle Mountain claimed Saturday’s victory. “We came over here as Cory (Sample) is going to haul my car to the Super Nationals. So I decided I’d race my son’s car as it’s a 2013 Addiction chassis,” Randy Artz said
